Easy to read, fun and tragic in the same time... Hassel manages to paint comically the tragedies of the WWII.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Real Author?, Feb 25 2007

I read a few Hassel books back in the 80's and thoroughly enjoyed them. Trouble was I never owned any so I was happy to get the reissue of Legion. While the translation is pretty dodgy and the writing kind of crappy in spots, I still really enjoyed this book. It's actually much less graphic than his later tales.

However, I have come across a site and author who claims that Sven Hassel is not whom he claims to be and is actually a Nazi collaborator who served with the Danish HIPO (hilfspolizei) during the occupation. [...]

4.0 out of 5 stars dark humor, Jun 18 2004
By C. D. Hyatt "into88" (Friendswood, TX United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The first half of this novel reads almost like a work of satire,
ridicule mixed with the horror of being incarcerated in a prison camp mixed with the humor of those who dared to defy the
regime with their own individualism. In the end, the Reich needed every man they could get regardless of their personal or political proclivities and the ensuing experiences form the second half of the book which is pure horror.
