Born and bred in the Welsh valleys, he followed his schoolmates into the coal mines at the age of fifteen. In 1979 he applied to join the Parachute Regiment. Enlisted in 2 Para battalion, he served in Northern Ireland and then went out to the island of South Georgia when the garrison of Royal Marines there was taken captive by Argentinian special forces. He joined the SAS in 1983.
