Product Description

Her name was Hannah Boyle, but to the people of the village she ould always be "The Girl"--Matthew Thornton's bastard.

Savagely treated by Matthew's wife Anne, she fled for protection to the devil-may-care horse-dealer, Ned Ridley, who had earlier befriended her.  But, as the waif grew to beautiful womanhood, she became an object of desire to the local young men, even to her half-brother.

Married off to a gross, sensual man, Hannah kept on fighting for the man she wanted:  Ned Ridley, who adored her and taught her the meaning of love and passion...

From the Publisher

'Catherine Cookson's novels are about hardship, the intractability of life and of individuals, the struggle first to survive and next to make sense of one's survival. Humour, toughness, resolution and generosity are Cookson virtues, in a world which she often depicts as cold and violent. Her novels are weighted and driven by her own early experiences of illegitimacy and poverty. This is what gives them power. In the specialised world of women's popular fiction, Cookson has created her own territory' - Helen Dunmore, The Times

5.0 out of 5 stars the girl, Nov 26 2009

(REAL NAME)
The sellers price was extremily reasonable, and the delivery was prompt and quick.

For anyone that has fallen in love with the movie adaptations of Cookson's books, I heartly recommend picking up one and reading it. The characters are so much more vivid and multifaceted.

The Girl has a lot of the same elements that appear a number of Cookson's books. a young girl that loses her
precarious innocence through a dramatic life
change, someone will die, and then a dashing young man rescue her.
Her descriptions are never ranchy, just extremily romantic and set in the past.

Cookson, unlike Danelle Steele, can take this storyline and make it fresh every time.

Cookson grew up rather impoverished herself and then became one of the wealthiest Brits.
I think this is why she was such a successful writer. Her own experiences must have inspired her (;
