A society of medieval fantasists enacts its annual summer war to determine the next year's king. One contender is the Lady Siobhan--mundanely known as Cass Dunreith--and it's thought by many that this is her year. But the incumbent king is determined to remain so at all costs, and thereby hangs this tale. King Fieran calls on supernatural forces for aid, and only Cass can even see them, much less oppose them. The three levels of this graphic novel (the quotidian, "real world" life of Cass, the medieval society's gathering, and the occult conflict beyond it) play off one another well, though except for the reader, only Cass is able to move among them all. One of Chris Claremont's earliest major prose efforts in the realm of fantasy, with a strong female lead (who writes comic books!). The story is good, but not as gripping as I expected. John Bolton's painted art is simply breathtaking, and makes up for the somewhat disappointing story.
