Product Description

From AudioFile

This early adventure showcases Stout's immortal, fat detective, Nero Wolfe. Our hero is confronted by an apparently accidental poisoning and an elusive leather box that could contain the key to the entire case. All the trappings of Wolfe's universe are in place, from the orchids to the peevishness. The talented Michael Prichard puts some excitement into his voice but does not differentiate the characters very well, except for Wolfe himself. For Wolfe, he reads in an understated, deep, rich intonation that allows the listener to visualize that one-seventh of a ton, creased-faced genius. The other men and women in the tale are mostly unmemorable. 3.0 out of 5 stars Wolfe Melodrama, Aug 3 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Red Box (Audio Cassette)
An early Wolfe where Stout still hasn't quite got his main character right (I mean Archie Goodwin, not Wolfe). Like its immediate predecessor, The Rubber Band, the story is highly dramatic and over-written compared with later Wolfes. But it's got pace and a memorable baddie.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best, Nov 25 1998
By A Customer
Stout in his prime with Archie and Nero grooved into their characters, very fast pacing and one of the best plots in the series.
