Product Description

From Amazon.com

It's clear that when Robbins sits down to write, he has one thing on his mind: having himself some fun. I read Another Roadside Attraction, years ago, then immediately went back to the beginning of the book and read it again. Robbins holds nothing back in this, his first novel. It's a perfect introduction to the Robbins oeuvre of oddness. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Product Description

What if the Second Coming didn’t quite come off as advertised? What if “the Corpse” on display in that funky roadside zoo is really who they say it is—what does that portend for the future f western civilization? And what if a young clairvoyant named Amanda reestablishes the flea circus as popular entertainment and fertility worship as the principal religious form of our high-tech age? Another Roadside Attraction answers those questions and a lot more. It tell us, for example, what the sixties were truly all about, not by reporting on the psychedelic decade but by recreating it, from the inside out. In the process, this stunningly original seriocomic thriller is fully capable of simultaneously eating a literary hot dog and eroding the borders of the mind. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hysterical, moving, unearthly, and well . . . just great!, Mar 30 2005
A truly fantastic book - easily one of my favorites. Robbins combines outstanding imagination and imagery with humor and thought provoking philosophy. He has managed to outline the struggle between self and religion that many partake in daily often without being able to qualify it. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone who has ever once thought about their own mortality, morals, values and beliefs - religious or otherwise.

Also recommended: BARK OF THE DOGWOOD

5.0 out of 5 stars Great writing, Feb 6 2004
By A Customer
While "Cowgirls" is, in my opinion, the best of the Robbins lot, "Roadside" is a close second. I've read them all and love each and every one. He never does the same thing twice in his books, yet manages to have a sense of style and way of writing that lets you know this is a work from Robbins. His characters are at once unbelievable and yet more memorable and real than people we might know in everyday life.

Also recommended: Even Cowgirls Get the Blues and McCrae's Bark of the Dogwood

1.0 out of 5 stars Hated This Book, Jan 24 2004
By "ticktock01" (East Windsor, New Jersey United States) - See all my reviews
I guess I am in the minority, but I had to force myself to finish this book. I've read so many wonderful reviews of Tom Robbins books. I'm sure I'm in the minority. This book was recommended to me as a good one to read first. It will also be my last.
I just don't like his style of writing. He jumps all over the place. His characters are overly sexed and talk to animals.
I am not an illiterate. I have a graduate degree and enjoy reading contemporary litterature as well as the classics. I Just don't enjoy this very "1960's" style of writing. My advice to anyone that has not read any of Tom Robbins books is to take one out of the library before you invest money in one.
