Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Quick's latest work, a flimsy and fairly routine piece, lacks the panache that made her earlier Regencies interesting. Prudence Merryweather and Sebastian Fleetwood, the "legendary" Earl of Angelstone, hit it off after meeting at a ball because they share an element of "intellectual curiosity": she hunts "spectral phenomena," and he (courtesy of a Bow Street Runner who slips him intriguing cases) hunts criminals. When, at another party, Prue and Sebastian are caught pussyfooting in the hostess's bedroom, an impromptu engagement results, giving them ample opportunity to poke into each other's investigations. Sebastian, whose parents were ill-treated by the family, has wanted revenge on his kin for years; when his aunt publicly insults Prue, he is ready to exploit his role as head of the family and get them booted out of society. However, Prue's moderating influence persuades him to set aside revenge and act as a benevolent patriarch, a scenario that may sound familiar to readers of Wildest Hearts, this author's most recent contemporary romance (written as Jayne Ann Krentz).

Product Description

From a magnificent ballroom ablaze with lights to an imposing country house steeped in shadows comes a breathtaking tale of an impetuous miss--and a passion that leads to peril...

At five and twenty, Prudence Merryweather knew very well tht risks a woman took by visiting a gentleman in the dead of night. But bearding the notorious Earl of Angelstone in his den was the only way to stop him from engaging her hot-headed brother in a duel. And that was why she found herself ushered into Sebastian's frobidding presence at three int the morning--and thoroughly kissed before dawn.

She was a country-bred innocent--and an intriguing experience for a man who dwelt more in the shadows than in the sunshine. Yet as her boldness drew Prue into one dangerous episode after another, Sebastian found himself torn between a raging hunger to possess her and a driving need to protect her. And the reckless beauty would soon need all the protection she could get...

3.0 out of 5 stars ????, Jun 27 2003
By pina3470 "pina3470" (Bronx, New York United States) - See all my reviews
I purchased this book a while back on a recommendation of a co-worker....
I have started and stopped several times. Finally I have decided that I would complete the darn thing.... I usually enjoy romance novels but this one I just can't get into.... I don't want to write Ms.Quick off just yet I may try one or two of her other ones....but this one is not impressive at all..

4.0 out of 5 stars "Quick" Witted, Jan 14 2003
By "saucylass1" (Rancho Cucamonga, Ca USA) - See all my reviews
I have been quickly accumulating all of Amanda Quick's romances, and this one did not fail to meet my expectations!

I, too, dislike the name Prudence for the heroine, but as "Prue", the name is quite endearing. I love the fact Ms. Quick gives her a "ghost hunting" hobby which matches the hero's passion for excitement.

What draws the reader most to this story is that the characters, far from being "diamonds of the first water" are very down to earth, extremely likeable, and endearing. Prue wears spectacles and Sebastian is consumed by periods of melancholia and despair. Prue's sunny disposition melts the chill in his heart. It is quite entertaining to read their "rows" with each other and it is funny to see Prue stand up to the man whom has been named "The Fallen Angel".

Definitely add this book to your library, should you have the chance!

1.0 out of 5 stars unimpressive..., Oct 29 2002
By A Customer
I was...beyond unimpressed by this book. It was so BLAND. So we have a heroine that...barges in at 3am, makes random demands for the hero to apologize, because her own brother won't...and then, sorta sits back and twiddles her thumbs for the rest of the book...
She would be tossed out of any debate tournament for repitition, and lack of structure, as well as slightly faulty logic-- "yes, so, my brother challenged YOU to a duel, but, um, it's still your fault, and you have to apologize--even though you gain absolutely nothing from it"
huh?!
