From Publishers Weekly

Quinn ( Dreamer ) won the Turner Tomorrow Award's half-million-dollar first prize for this fascinating and odd book--not a novel by any conventional definition--which was written 13 years ago but could not find a publisher. The unnamed narrator is a disillusioned modern writer who answers a personal ad ("Teacher seeks pupil. . . . Apply in person.") and thereby meets a wise, learned gorilla named Ishmael that can communicate telepathically. The bulk of the book consists entirely of philosophical dialogues between gorilla and man, on the model of Plato's Republic. Through Ishmael, Quinn offers a wide-ranging if highly general examination of the history of our civilization, illuminating the assumptions and philosophies at the heart of many global problems. Despite some gross oversimplifications, Quinn's ideas are fairly convincing; it's hard not to agree that unrestrained population growth and an obsession with conquest and control of the environment are among the key issues of our times. Quinn also traces these problems back to the agricultural revolution and offers a provocative rereading of the biblical stories of Genesis. Though hardly any plot to speak of lies behind this long dialogue, Quinn's smooth style and his intriguing proposals should hold the attention of readers interested in the daunting dilemmas that beset our planet. 50,000 first printing; major ad/promo.

From Library Journal

Winner of the Turner Tomorrow Fellowship, a literary competition intended to foster works of fiction that present positive solutions to global problems, this book offers proof that good ideas do not necessarily equal good literature. Ishmael, a gorilla rescued from a traveling show who has learned to reason and communicate, uses these skills to educate himself in human history and culture. Through a series of philosophical conversations with the unnamed narrator, a disillusioned Sixties idealist, Ishmael lays out a theory of what has gone wrong with human civilization and how to correct it, a theory based on the tenet that humanity belongs to the planet rather than vice versa. While the message is an important one, Quinn rarely goes beyond a didactic exposition of his argument, never quite succeeding in transforming idea into art. Despite this, heavy publicity should create demand. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 10/15/91.

(REAL NAME)
I have a masters in philosophy, and I am working towards my doctrate. I am, of course, aware that this does not make me the ultimate authority in literature or discourse, but it also points out that I am far from ignorant or unable to "think with an open mind."
I am also not a Christian, nor am I a conservative. I, like Quinn, am a liberal enviromentalist. I even agree with many of his conclusions.
That said...

-- This is honestly the worst book I have ever read. Honestly. --

I have no idea why so many people are praising it as an intellectual triumph. My guess is that many people agree emphatically and passionately with the themes of the book, even if they didn't before reading it. When finding that they have a champion for their cause, which is so virulently opposed in mainstream culture, they stand behind him just as emphatically and passionately as they stand behind his ideals.
It can't be his writing. Please tell me it isn't the writing.
This was so poorly written, and the conclusions were so poorly argued or supported, that I was genuinely intellectually insulted. I felt mentally offended. I was angry that I actually read through this, trying so carefully to find what all the hype was about. Unfortunately, it only got worse from the front to the back.
Ishmael, a gorilla, is teaching the main character an extremely one-sided view. He constantly champions his view as totally original, world-changing, ultimate, and perfect. Not only is it cliche liberal propaganda (again, which I actually agree with!), but it is far from well-phrased, well-argued, well-supported, or even consistently intelligent. The philosophy is nonexistent, the dialogue is purely lecture, the anthropology is uneducated, the history is ad hoc, and the sociology is contemptuous. The points he tries to make are presumptuous, horribly exaggerated, one-sided, arrogant, unoriginal, audacious, anti-humanist, pessimistic, cynical, unfounded, and sometimes defiantly untrue.

This is propaganda, pure and simple.

I am sad, though unsurprised, to see my fellow liberals champion their own hollow propaganda with the same rabid, arrogant, extremist fervor so common to their conservative counterparts.
Indeed, the left and the right are separated only by the mirror.

(TOP 10 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Ishmael (Paperback)
Much like Hominids by Robert J. Sawyer, this book looks at the history of humankind on this planet and all we have done to it. It will challenge the prevailing belief that more and bigger is better. The book begins with an ad in the paper "TEACHER seeks pupil. Must have earnest desire to save the world. Apply in Person." In the book, the gorilla Ishmael has learned to communicate through thought with humans. He also has a message that we cannot afford not to hear. The book focuses around a series of conversations between Ishmael and his student. It presents a different interpretation of how we went from being a hunter-gather society to an agrarian one. Also how that system is bound to fail. For me the most haunting thing in the book is two quotes. Early on we see a poster that states: "WITH MAN GONE, WILL THERE BE HOPE FOR GORILLA?"p.9 and much later, on the back of the first poster, "WITH GORILLA GONE, WILL THERE BE HOPE FOR MAN?" p.263. This is a great read especially for a sunny summer afternoon, or two. This is also the first in a trilogy.
