From Publishers Weekly

Well-drawn characters and a literate way with the grisly distinguish this first of a new fantasy series from Stoker-winner Lebbon (Desolation). Long after the Cataclysmic War that devastated the world and banished magic, the Mages are trying to ensure that the magic, if it returns, is under their control. When farm boy Rafe Baburn shows signs of magical gifts, the Mages send their relentless minions, the Red Monks, in pursuit. Rafe must flee for his life, but fortunately he finds allies in a thief, a woman warrior and a scholarly witch. Many of the well-handled action scenes are from the bad guys' point-of-view, an unusual perspective that helps round out the author's fantasy world. The climactic battle, a variation on the classic raising of the dead, offers an ambiguous outcome that presumably will be resolved in the sequel.

4.0étoiles sur 5 Undecided,, Mars 18 2006
Not sure whether to love it or hate it. So I have to say I liked it. The characters are well done and the background vivid. It had many good action scenes which I like and the overall concept of the book is intriguing. You should like it.

If you like books like this one, might I suggest another I've recently come across. The Unsuspecting Mage by Brian S. Pratt. It's another fantasy adventure sure to please. I highly recommend it

5.0étoiles sur 5 DUSK sheds light on an amazing world, Fév 1 2006
Par "terrytvgal" (Coquitlam, B C Canada) - Voir tous mes commentaires
DUSK is the first work of fantasy for acclaimed horror writer Tim Lebbon. It's a perfect 'cross-over' novel; a dark-fantasy, sure to please his current fans and exite fantasy readers looking for a new world to explore and fall in love with.

Noreela is not like any place I have read about before. It's a world undone by a war long over, haunted by the decimation of magic, terrified of the Red Monks who exsit only to keep magic from returning and more terrified still by the Mages determined to bring it back. Noreela is a world hanging in the balance; stagnant and futile, waiting for it knows not what to bring about change, any change.

When a lone Red Monk annihilates a whole town to destroy a single young boy with the potential of magic, it's clear that some sort of change has begun. If Rafe had died the change would have been different. But Rafe lived, and it is his journey we take in the pages of DUSK.

While the Mages prepare to reclaim Noreela and bring magic back, Rafe's fate pulls together an unlikely band of companions. Hope is a witch, with an inkling of what Rafe is and an unquenchable drive to keep him safe until she can have what he holds; Kosar, a thief; Alishia, a librarian with history unravelling in her mind. A'Meer is a warrior with skills almost forgotten and Trey is a drug addict who fled his home in terror of the mysterious Nax.

Talk about being between a rock and a hard place. The Monks want to kill Rafe and the Mages only care about the seed of magic he holds. If it were only the Mages and the Monks they faced, they'd have been 'lucky' but Noreela is a treacherous land, and with unerring cruelty the desperate group encounters the worst it has to offer.

DUSK is a rich and addictive book, full of the some of the strangest creatures and most unusual magic ever brought together to tell a tale. The characters are complex and memorable, the landscape alien and fecund. The story is brutal and tender, full of danger and dedication. The writing is passionate and convincing and some of the best to date from Tim's gifted imagination.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Not Your Average Fantasy, Déc 7 2005
I have been reading Lebbons work for a while now and was a little reluctant to read this one. Its described as a 'dark fantasy' and fantasy really doesn't interest me much.
I managed to obtain an ARC (advanced reading copy) of this book and I am so glad I gave it a chance. It is indeed 'dark fantasy' with a capital D. It is very dark.
You won't find any of the familiar trappings of what I consider fantasy. No magic elves or dwarves in this one.
Lebbon lets his imagination run wild and creates a bleak, and more often than not violent world, filled with strange people and places. The story starts out with the slaughter of an entire village by a single man(?). The pace is set, and never lets up.
Lebbon has written some great horror stories, but this may very well be his finest writing to date.
