Product Description

They are the galaxy's most elite fighting force.  And as the battle against the Empire rages, the X-wing pilots risk life and machine to protect the Rebel Alliance.  Now they must go on a daring undercover mission--as the crew of an Imperial warship.

It is Wedge Antilles' boldest creation: a covert-action unit of X-wing fighters, its pilots drawn from the dregs of other units, castoffs and rejects given one last chance.  But before the new pilots can complete their training, the squadron's base is attacked by former Imperial Admiral Trigit, and Wraith Squadron is forced to swing into action--taking over an Imperial warship and impersonating its crew.  The mission: to gain vital intelligence about Trigit's secret weapons, to sabotage the admiral's plans, and to lure him into an Alliance trap.  But the high-stakes gamble pits Wraith Squadron's ragtag renegades against the Empire's most brilliant master of guile and deception.

Are they up to the challenge?

If not, the penalty is instant death.

Ingram

The exciting, "New York Times" bestselling "X-Wings" series concludes with this explosive tale of fighter pilots in the "Star Wars" universe. Complete with original music and sound effects. Simultaneous Bantam mass market release. 2 cassettes. .

5.0 out of 5 stars The M*A*S*H of Star Wars!, Jul 9 2004
I won't bother to compare this book to the Stackpole cycle, except to say that it blows it away in every category.

This book is, to quote a previous reviewer, "a novel about people in war, not just war", which is how so many Star Wars novels strike me. In all of the novels from Zahn's Thrawn trilogy to Stackpole's Rogue Squadron cycle, I have never been so attatched to the characters as I am in Allston's Wraith Squadron trilogy.

Overall, the best comparison I can give is to say that Allston's trilogy is like the M*A*S*H of Star Wars; the characters have life, depth, and personality, with conflicts and friendships forming every step of the way. They aren't superhuman, invincible and emotionally distant like so many other characters. Again, this is "a novel about people in war, not just war", and as such WILL make you laugh, cry, and occasionally cheer out loud.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Next Generation of X-Wing pilots!, Feb 22 2004
By J. K. Moser "JKM" (Flemington, New Jersey USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Wraith Squadron was the first Star Wars book written by Aaron Allston and the first to feature an all new X-Wing squadron. Featuring a more focussed role on Wedge Anitlles, Wraith Squadron picks up right where the Bacta War left off. Instead of searching for elite pilots, Antilles wants a bunch of already trained screw ups to fight under his command. From a failed Jedi to a mechanic who gets stage fright to a former child star, these characters are both unique and hysterical. Wraith Squadron is among the freshest of the Star Wars books. The characters Phanan and Face make the book totally worth it. I recommend highly!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of the X-Wing series, Oct 26 2003
By "bucket_shot" (Vic, Australia) - See all my reviews
This book is, in my opinion, the best of all nine X-Wing books. I was interested to see what a new author and squadron would do to this series- now I believe the changes revitalised it. Transition to new characters is admirably smooth, the plot is tight and storyline convincing. Allston also manages to combine wicked dogfights with genuinely funny humour and slapstick - vital elements other X-Wing books sometimes lack. Most notable is the excellent character development: you'll never ask "who was that..?" when a pilot dies- you'll cry. Wraith Squadron will blow you away.
