Viscount Leo Kierston is sent to escort Cordelia Brandenburg on the journey to her new husband, Prince Michael von Sachsen. Feather's (Virtue) latest, is full of sharp and often disquieting contrasts that may rattle some readers. The book starts in a sweetly frivolous tone as Lady Cordelia Brandenburg is married by proxy, at the same time her best friend, Marie Antoinette is pledged to the future dauphin. Cordelia is the typical cute-and-plucky naif who quickly decides that she's in love with Viscount Leo Kierston, the stand-in for her intended, a widowed prince with small twin daughters. Together, the proxied brides are to travel to Versailles to join their husbands and solemnize their marriages. Maybe, given the fate of her good friend, readers shouldn't be surprised when Cordelia's own story switches from lighthearted to disturbing: when she arrives at her new home, she learns that her husband intends to break her spirit, ignores his children, enjoys sexual perversion and murdered his first wife. The promise of a happy ending may not be enough for everyone to stay with it until the bittersweet end.

If you enjoy reading books where the female protagonist is abused and raped then by all means purchase this book. I found parts of this book offensive and disturbing. The characters were poorly developed and two dimensional at best. I understand that romance novels often stereotype, but this book goes too far. I recommend that you walk away from this book and purchase a delightful Julia Quinn novel instead.

I really enjoyed this book and I loved both Cordelia and Leo. I was touched by both characters and the tragedies that they suffered. I know that some readers are put off by Jane Feather's use of spousal abuse in this book and some of her other novels but it is part of the plot and it advances the charcters' developement and the plot.

i found Cordelia absolutely charming. How can you not love a character that can look great, even while cheating. The scene while they're playing dice in the carriage was great!
And plus, how could you not want to have a dashing, hunky hero like Leo come to your rescue? Man, he can rescue me anytime! LOL.

I enjoyed the detail that Jane did to describe the palaces and the real characters. I'm sure she gave some twists to the personalities of Marie-Antoinette and the King; but they were definitely helpful in the describing the scene of palace life and how they were supposed to act.

Jane Feather is a very good author, but The Diamond Slipper is not a favorite. Leo was wrong for not telling her what kind of man she was marrying. Read more
