Product Description

From Library Journal

Sheltered scientist Celeste Ashton has no idea that her unorthodox work with dolphins would end up causing such a stir in both the academic community and the popular press. When the Times labels her a "mermaid" and an group of prestigious scientists condescendingly question her research and her qualifications, she has no choice but to allow the "professional skeptic," ichthyology professor Titus Thorne, to come to her sea-side home and observe her dolphins in action. The result is an unusual story written with whimsy and grace. Krahn (The Unlikely Angel, Bantam, 1996) lends a lively, humorous touch to some of the more important women's issues of the day. Her fans won't be disappointed in this one. She lives in Minnesota.

Product Description

With the wit of The Last Bachelor, the charm of The Perfect Mistress, and the sparkle of The Unlikely Angel, Betina Krahn has penned an enchanting new romance about a woman ahead of her time and an academic who must choose between cold reason and...The Mermaid.

If Celeste Ashton hadn't needed money to save her grandmother's seaside estate, she would never have published her observations on ocean life and the dolphins she has befriended.  So when her book bursts upon the London scene, making her an instant celebrity, she is unprepared for the attention...especially when it comes from handsome scientist Titus Thorne.  While Titus suspects there is something fishy about her theories, Celeste is determined to be taken seriously.  Soon their fiery clashes create sparks neither expects, not least when Celeste dares Titus to let her give him a personal tour of the world she knows so well.  But when a shady entrepreneur takes too close an interest in Celeste's work--and Celeste--Titus must decide if he will risk his credibility, his career--and his heart--to side with the Lady Mermaid.

3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable--but not a 5 star book, Jun 4 2003
By A Customer
I like to use the rating system on Amazon when looking for new books--usually a 5 star ratings means a GREAT book. The Mermaid by Betina Krahn is a good book, a quick enjoyable read, but not what I would classify as a 'keeper'. I didn't feel that her characters developed very well--I didn't care for her secondary characters at all--they were more silly than anything else. It just wasn't nearly as good as the other reviews lead you to believe. It is a nice quick read, but not anything I would re-read or recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thoroughly enjoyable, fun read!, Dec 4 2002
By baltimore0502 "Hon!" (BALTIMORE, MD USA) - See all my reviews
What a great book! This is my 2nd Betina Krahn book (first was the super "Husband Test") and she is quickly becoming a favourite! This Victorian battle of the sexes was such delicious fun!

Celeste Ashton has just published "The Secret Life of Dolphins" amid much fanfare, and controversy. The (all male) scientific community is torn between denouncing her outright (she's a woman for heaven's sake, not a trained scientist!) and a salacious curiousity to see this woman who claims to sail, swim with dolphins and who boldy writes about the mating habits of the creatures. The fact that the tabloid press has dubbed her "The Mermaid" has not helped her credibility in this regard.

Titus Thorne is a stuffy, pompous, repressed Professor of Ichthyology at Oxford who's made a name for himself by exposing quacks and charlatans. When Celeste is invited to speak to the Zoological and Oceanographic Societies, he is there to challenge her. She then challenges him to come to her seaside home and observe and verify her findings. He hesitates, but ultimately, reluctantly, agrees.

From the moment he arrives in Pevensey Bay, Titus's world is turned upside down. Celeste's approach to her research is so foreign, unorthodox (and frightening) to him. And her grandmother and her friends from the Atlantean Society surely must be quite mad! And things are not going well for poor Celeste. She knows full well that Titus thinks she is a fraud, her Nana is not helping matters with her talk of Atlantis, but worst of all she cannot seem to summon her dolphins!

Eventually the dolphins make their appearance, and Titus's world once more tilts. The fascinating creatures, not to mention the equally fascinating and alluring Celeste, are beginning to have a strong, transforming affect on Titus. And Celeste is equally smitten - he's so intelligent and handsome and so adorably, easily shocked. Their romance progresses well until the Atlantean Society sticks it's nose in and unwittingly drives Titus away. But back in London, Titus sees some of Celeste's dolphins looking sickly and mistreated. What has happened? How did they get there? He must get to Celeste - together they must try to save them.

Great story! Between the old Oxford Dons pushing Titus out of his comfort zone, the Atlantean Society's rituals, even the dolphins themselves, Titus and Celeste don't stand a chance. They're meant to be!

5.0 out of 5 stars very interesting book, Jan 30 1998

I have found all of the books I have bought by Tina humorous and delightful. They add many hours of smiles. I am always checking Walden Book Store at the mall wondering if she has another release.
