Product Description

To tame a tough man, it takes...The Soft Touch.

She is a softhearted Baltimore heiress...

Lovely but disastrously tenderhearted Diamond Wingate has terrible trouble saying "No": to the poor and unfortunate who beg at her gates; to entrepreneurs with big plans and no money; and worse, to the silver-tongued young men who line up to propose marriage. So far she has managed to keep her three fiancés a secret, insisting she cannot marry until she turns twenty-three. But her birthday--and disaster--are looming....

He is a hardheaded Westerner...

Rugged, independent "Bear" McQuaid has never taken a dime he didn't earn by his own hard work. But now his dream of building a railroad, so close to coming true, is about to collapse from lack of funds. Approaching Baltimore's infamous "soft touch," he learns she has other assets as well: a delicate, strawberry blond beauty and shining intelligence--and a fascination for the romance of the railroad. Then Bear uncovers Diamond's embarrassment of riches in fiancés as well as money and charms. Now he must make a choice: finance his dream through a little genteel blackmail, or do it the hard way...by falling in love.

5.0 out of 5 stars It is one I recommend!!, Dec 15 2000
By Brittany Risinger (Yankton, South Dakota United States) - See all my reviews
I'm only 13yrs old and I thought that it was excellent. Sure I thought the first couple of chapters boring but after the characters Diamond and "Bear" met everything turned upside down. Bear's words wouldnt come out right, he can't keep his "hormones" on check, and he can't keep his temper! Diamond is the same way. Only her words will come out right, she can keep her "hormones" under check sometimes, but it's ussually her feelings being hurt. I picked this book up because I couldn't find my ussual author, Candice Proctor, and my friends were impatient. Now all i want to do is read more of her books!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Light and Fun, Oct 1 2000
I really enjoyed reading this book. Diamond Wingate is a wealthy woman who has trouble saying no- to the poor, or to men. "Bear" needs money to build a railroad, and thinks Diamond is just the person to give him some, if only he cans top kissing her long enough to ask for it or get her away from the clutches of her three fiances. This book was very amusing and fun, even though it was not as good as some others by Ms. Krahn, such as The Last Bachelor. However the characters are nice and it is pleasing to see them change throughout the book. Bear learned to include others in his dream to build a railroad and to except help from other people. Diamond learned to say no. While this book is not a deeply emotional novel, it is lighthearted and an easy read. I reccommend it to anyone who just wants a light read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing and boring., July 30 2000
By L. S. Tucker (Port St. Lucie, FL USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I WAS a fan of Ms. Krahn, based on her prior books. This book should have been another winner, based on the premise. Unfortunately, I was bored almost from the get-go. I felt no compassion for the characters, I didn't see any chemistry at all. If I was asked to recommend a book to read, this wouldn't be the one.

2.0 out of 5 stars So-So
This book barely held my attention. Sure, it has moments of humor and moments of sweetness, but I couldn't help but become unbearably bored after the first several chapters... Lisez davantage
