Product Description

From Library Journal

Marking Feather's hardcover debut and neatly concluding her well-received "Bride Trilogy," this sexy adventure sends scholarly Olivia Granville, the last of three friends who vowed never to marry, down a cliff, into a pirate's arms, and onto the high seas. A sheltered but surprisingly adventurous aristocratic heroine, a staunch Royalist pirate intent on rescuing the king (in direct conflict with Olivia's noble father), and a potent mixture of political intrigue, civil war, and child sexual abuse set the pages alight in this action-filled, swashbuckling tale set against the backdrop of English political turmoil of the 1640s. While the distasteful villains and some subject matter will not work for everyone, this lively, occasionally ungentle, historical will no doubt satisfy longtime fans. Feather is a popular, multipublished author of historical romances.

3.0 out of 5 stars Least likely to read over again, Jul 29 2003
Unfortunately, other than the well-crafted writing, the story itself was quite unrealistic and not convincing. I felt the characters were twenty-first century people dressed in costumes. They just did things for the sake of it, like play chess on the whim of the moment. There was no conscience on Olivia's part, other than a blocked memory of abuse. In those days, I would think people had more ethics than what the story leads you to believe.

The story was a cross between a fantasy and a single woman's worst nightmare.

I was hoping that as I read more, that something good will happen in the story. It just got worse.

1.0 out of 5 stars The least credible romance, May 19 2002
By Dr W. Richards "wmr-uk" (Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Olivia, the daughter of Cato Granville, is woolgathering one day, steps off the edge of a cliff and is knocked unconscious. She is rescued by a pirate ship and, once she recovers, the pirate captain climbs into her bed and just casually has sex with her. Riiiight. Okay. And she decides that she wants to see him again?!

So then once he has her taken home, she sneaks out of her father's house to meet him again. And even when she realises that he has to be part of a plot to work against her father's political agenda, she stays quiet and doesn't tell Cato what's going on. Even though she knows that Anthony is a pirate.

I'm sorry; I just didn't see any romance in here, and I didn't even like the 'hero'. And as for the ending, what kind of thing is that? I kept waiting for him to renounce his lawless life, but no; he continues to be a pirate, and Cato lets Phoebe go to him instead of having him handed over to the police and hanged. And they don't even get married!

Terrible.

2.0 out of 5 stars Historical Romance, Sep 21 2001
By A Customer
Too much historical and not enough romance. This was my first Jane Feather read. Anthony did not live up to a pirate's bravery when it came down to Olivia having to face her father whom she betrayed for him (he sat safely and comfortably at the beach drawing pictures of her.) Their relationship was not well developed, Anthony was never even properly introduced to her family and they never even got married. Olivia seem to be making all the sacrifices for their relationship while Anthony makes sacrifices for his friends/family...
