This review is from: Lord Geoffrey's Fancy (Paperback)
A successful historical novel should educate as well as entertain. In taking the reader to a lost civilization or time the author should make us believe that we are experiencing the reality of a far-off place. Alfred Duggan is almost always able to do that and Lord Geoffrey's fancy is one of his cleverest recreations. Set in Greece in the 1200s Duggan examines the lives of Western Catholic knights who occupy the land conquered by their fathers from the Orthodox Byzantine empire at the time of the Fourth Crusade.

Duggan's technique is to let us see this ill-fated little kingdom through the eyes of a stranger to it, a knight from England who has come east to seek his fortune. William de Briwerr is an unsophisticated but well-meaning character who has been brought up to value homage and loyalty above all else but who finds himself in a culture where the truth is elastic and vows are made to be broken. Luckily he soon marries a native-born wife who is able to explain the twists and turns and divided allegiances to her baffled husband.

William takes service with the central character of the tale, Sir Geoffrey de Bruyere, the best knight in all Romanie and follows his charismatic lord into battle and betrayals as they fight Greeks, Slavs, Turks and their fellow Franks. Readers will learn much about the politics, love affairs and martial life of this long-forgotten corner of history. Another success for Duggan.
