I'll try not to riddle this review with purple prose of praise. The title is sufficient. I will say that the genius of this book lies entirely in its point of view: that of the Neanderthal, that stage in humanity where we were driven primarily by our senses and instincts. Golding's genius lies in his ability to make us experience the limitations of pure sense perception and severely limited thought process (they think in 'pictures'). For example Lok sees the 'ears of the trees' or the 'bones of the earth'. It is up to us to interpret what Lok is looking at (in this case mushrooms and rocks).

I'm going to issue out two tips or warnings, or w/e you'd like to call them. Firstly, this is a very challenging read. You must be more patient here than with other books. Every line counts. Turn down the music, shut off the TV, put the kids to bed. It demands the full power of your imagination and intellect. There are still scenes which I do not understand. Secondly, if there was ever a book where one ought to read on until the very, very last line, this is it. As my eyes and mind went through the final words, I set the book down and stared ahead, not knowing what to think. My body was affected somehow. Golding had hit a mark in all of us, all at once. And he does it so perfectly. If you start this book, finish it.

I'm going to make the bold statement of placing this amongst those tough, but ever rewarding masterpieces such as Paradise Lost. Obviously not the same genre, and not as epic. But powerful. So powerful.
