5.0étoiles sur 5 Excellent, Mars 9 2001
This review is from: Amnesia Moon (Paperback)
Don't be swayed by the negative reviews, this is a great novel, thought provoking, imaginative, and well written. I think the reviewers coming from Motherless Brooklyn are resisting Lethem's efforts to pull them into a dream, where things aren't wrapped up into a tidy little package. This completes my reading of Lethem's works and I thoroughly enjoyed all of them.

4.0étoiles sur 5 A fantastic read, as long as you don't mind having to think, Janv. 3 2003

This review is from: Amnesia Moon (Paperback)
Amnesia Moon was the first Lethem book I ever read, and I couldn't put it down. I have since read several of his other books, and of those I've read, only Gun, With Occasional Music comes close. However, be warned, only read this book with the understanding that you have to figure it out, because he never tells you flat out. Even compared to other Lethem books, this one is ambiguous. I read the entire thing looking for closure and an explanation and of course I didn't get that. I've been waiting to get my copy back from a friend so that I can reread it in the right mindset, to get a better understanding of the book.

Anyway, I don't mean to make it sound bad, it's absoultely wonderful, just understand that it's not for everyone. If you only like books that travel from point A to point B in a straight line, skip this one. But if you're prepared to be taken on a fantastic journey, traveling every way but straight, and to be released from any definition of reality, pick a copy up today!

4.0étoiles sur 5 Good Novel if You Know What You are in for..., Sep 1 2002
This review is from: Amnesia Moon (Paperback)
If you like tight, neat endings and plot driven stories DO NOT read this novel. You will not like it. If you don't mind ambiguity or like subjective messages than read it. This isn't sharp like Gun, w/ Occasional Music. Its murky and doesn't provdide easy answers -- if there are any answers to be found.
One problem is the use of the term 'post-apocalyptic' to describe it. The term is almost misleading as it conjures up visions of Mad Max. While there is some of that in the novel it is sure to disappoint fans of that genre. Instead it reminds me of the novel Logan's Run and Ursula K LaGuin's Lathe of Heaven. It has a very 70's sci-fi feel to it.
My only real problem is that the novel just ends as though Lethem tired of writing it one day and just decided to stop at a convient point.

3.0étoiles sur 5 Weak for a lethem novel
Having devoured most of the lethem novels, i found this to be his weakest - the tops being Gun, with occasional music and Motherless Brooklyn. Read more

1.0étoiles sur 5 Dull, incomplete, with racist undertones
This story is really ridiculous. Not only is Chaos not interesting and completely shallow as a character, but the actual story is a big snooze fest. Read more

5.0étoiles sur 5 Amazingly original
This might very well be the most original, head scrathing novel I've ever read. It's a bit like shifting randomly between a set of twilight zone episodes. Read more

5.0étoiles sur 5 Phenomenal Book
In the vein of Philip Dick, Roger Zelazny and even Alice in Wonderland, this book is a splendid work of science fiction that exceeds the genre. An excellent read.

3.0étoiles sur 5 My favorite Lethem novel

5.0étoiles sur 5 What did you expect?
It seems like most people out there are reading back from Motherless Brooklyn. IE: Going from a great lush semi-realistic tale to an earlier very lush dreamlike tale. Read more
