Product Description

In the grand tradition of the blockbusting parody Bored of the Ring, comes this uproarious literary spoof of Tolkien's other (much shorter) masterwork, The Hobbit. It has already sold 80,000 copies in hardcover--and is still going strong.

Tolkien was never this funny--and that's why we need this delicious parody. It follows the adventures of Bingo "Sac" Grabbings, a rather unremarkable Soddit of Upper Middle Earth. He ventures forth (despite very sore and swollen feet indeed!) alongside Gandef the Coughing Wizard and a band of psoriasis-scratching, who-knows-what's-in-the-pipe-puffing dwarves, as they set out to relieve the haughty dragon Smug of his ill-gotten gold. With the blockbuster box office success of the Lord of the Rings films, and the continued interest in the original books, the time is ripe for someone to poke a bit of good-natured fun at the phenomenon that is The Hobbit, and this hilarious satire succeeds brilliantly. Written by an acknowledged expert on all things Tolkien, it both salutes and skewers the classic novel, reinventing the tale of a courageous little being whose amazing persistence--and more than a bit of Soddit luck--belies his diminutive stature.

About the Author

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny, If Different From the Original, April 29 2004
By "vadlewis" (The U.S.A) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Soddit (Hardcover)
This book is a parody of The Hobbit, incase you couldnt tell from the book's title. This book focuses on comedy rather than following along with Tolkien's original classic, there is a feeling that Tolkien provided the insparation for this novel but, the characters and the story arent like those in the Hobbit, which is the the norm for a parody. The humor, though a bit weak at times, was virtually non-stop. This was the only reason reason that this book earned five stars from me. The humor was the main reason I purchased this book, there were laughs and many puns. The characters were well developed and there were many details. This book is worth its money and it should be read with, not instead of, the Hobbit. The Hobbit gives you the background for the tale and you can distinguish between characters far more easily, but, nontheless, this is a very entertaining book, thats it. There isnt any true literary value other than the fact that it makes fun of a great book and will make you laugh yourself to sleep. Buy it, or at least, borrow it from your local "hobbit-hole" library.

2.0 out of 5 stars not as good as bored of the rings, Dec 13 2003
This review is from: Soddit (Hardcover)
i bought this book hoping for another bored of the rings. Its ok overall, but it differs from the Hobbit to much. Characters die that should'nt, plot twists occur that should'nt. In places it felt as though the author was trying to re-write the story. instead of concentrating on comedy, like a parody should, it seemed to take itself a bit too seriously.
