Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

As this spectacular, large-scale space opera opens, Janus, a moon of Saturn, now revealed as an alien artifact, has suddenly left orbit and headed for interstellar space. The Rockhopper, a comet miner commanded by Capt. Bella Lind, is the only spacecraft in the solar system positioned to catch the huge alien machine. Though a short exploration is all that's planned, the Rockhopper soon finds itself trapped in Janus's time- and distance-distorting slipstream. Determining that Janus is heading toward an even more gigantic artifact orbiting the star Spica, the comet miners settle down to form their own castaway civilization, a process marred by the bad blood between those who support Captain Lind and those who blame her for their fate. Janus soon proves itself to be an incredibly strange and ever changing environment. Eventually, the castaways reach the Spica artifact, encounter several very alien species and discover that their fate is even stranger than they could have imagined. Reynolds (Century Rain) is occasionally clumsy in his character interactions, but he has a genius for big-concept SF and fans of Arthur C. Clarke's Rendezvous with Rama and Larry Niven's Ringworld will love this novel.

Product Description

Some centuries from now, the exploration and exploitation of the Solar System is in full swing. On the cold edge of the system, Bella Lind, captain of the huge commercial spacecraft Rockhopper IV, helps fuel this new gold rush by attaching mass-driver motors to organic-rich water-ice comets to move them back to the inner worlds. Her crew are tough, blue-collar miners, engineers and demolition experts. Around Saturn, something inexplicable happens: one of the moons leaves its orbit and accelerates out of the Solar System. The icy mantle peels away to reveal that it was never a moon in the first place, just a parked spacecraft, millions of years old, that has now decided to move on. Rockhopper IV, trapped in the pull, is hurled across time and space into the deep, distant future, arriving in a vast, alien-constructed chamber. And the crew are not alone, for each chamber contains an alien culture dragged into this cosmic menagerie at the end of time. The crew of the Rockhopper IV know a lot about blowing up comets, but not much about first contact with ultra-advanced aliens. They have two things to worry about: can they (and their new alien allies) negotiate their way through each harrying contact? And can they assimilate the avalanche of knowledge about their own future - including all the glittering, dangerous technologies that are now theirs for the taking - without destroying themselves in the process?

2.0 out of 5 stars Not his best, Jan 3 2010
By Malcolm (Ottawa, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pushing Ice (Paperback)
Definitely not his best work in my opinion. I doggedly persevered right to the end hoping that something would happen in the story, but nothing much did. The whole premise of the book was not very well explained and I was left thinking "what the heck was that all about?"

This book sparked an interest as I hadn't read any of this authors work before. I will read his stuff again. This book has great action and development on a grand scale. It's well thought out and it's characters all have soul. A treat to read. Do yourself a favor and try it!

5.0 out of 5 stars My 100-word book review, Jun 24 2006
By A. J. Cull (London, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pushing Ice (Hardcover)
I found Pushing Ice an excellent tale, and further proof that for Alastair Reynolds there is definitely life after his Inhibitor novels. The crew of mining spacecraft Rockhopper find themselves embarking on an unexpected voyage of discovery, after Saturn's tiny moon Janus starts to behave very oddly. This has similarities with Clarke classic Rendezvous with Rama, with added corporate politics and interpersonal friction. Some characters remain relatively undeveloped, but most are convincing, as is the future technology, which is impressive but never infallible. Credible aliens and gigantic space structures help this novel to evoke a fine, old-fashioned sense of wonder.
