4.0 out of 5 stars A good story from a Canadian Author, Jul 6 2006
By A. Maracle "The Professor" (Ontario, Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I remembering being in Grade 8 when my teacher introduced us to a book written by a 12 year old author. We were read a chapter a day and I was captivated by the story that unfolded.

The MacDonald Hall series is a great read for children who are in Grade 7 and up. Many of the situations that Korman describes in these works are merely slightly exgerated events that many of us have been in at one time of another. Each of them will produce a chuckle even in the grumpiest of people.

In this first novel, This Can't Be Happening, we are introduced to the two main characters. Boots and Bruno, two friends who are both attending a private school for boys. Their misadventures bring them into conflict with Mr. Sturgeon a.k.a The Fish. Through their own actions, Bruno and Boots are split up in an attempt to curb their mischievious desires. In the end, they redeem themselves, but not after having to suffer through living with new roommates whose habits would drive anyone out of their minds.

Bottom lin: kids will enjoy these books and even more so.... may find out where Malbonia is.

5.0 out of 5 stars so cool!, May 14 2004
By A Customer
I love these Gordon Korman books. You are always guarenteed to laugh out loud. I think they are fantastic for kids, or just anyone who enjoys light hearted, well written entertainment - I am 25 and still reread my Gordon Korman books!! I think that these books would be especially great to read to kids who don't like to read, and to get those said kids started - I mean this is enjoyment, pure and simple!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great beginning!, April 10 2004
By Arthur Slade (Saskatoon, SK Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Every writer and reader of YA fiction should read this book.  Not because it's the best book in Korman's long career, but because it's the first.  And he wrote it when he was twelve years old.  Many publishers publish books by kids because it's a great media bonanza -- Korman was one of the few child prodigies who turned out to be a prolific and talented writer.  In this first book he introduces Bruno and Boots, two smart alecky kids who get into loads of trouble through the course of the novel.  The plot is simple.  Bruno and Boots get into trouble.  Bruno and Boots find a clever way to get out of trouble.  But the fun is in the humour and the light-heartedness of the book.  Korman obviously liked these two characters because he went on to write several more books based at Mcdonald Hall.
