Product Description

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8–In the fourth book of Tamora Pierce's series (Scholastic, 1999), we follow the continuing adventures of four young mages in training: Tris, Sandry, Daja, and Briar. Each has a different magical talent, and Briar's is his ability to tap into the life energy of plants. The story begins with Briar's discovery that Flick, a friend from his past as a street urchin, has contracted an unusual illness. The disease spreads and before long becomes a plague. When Briar's beloved teacher, Rosethorn, contracts the illness, it becomes a race against time as Briar and the others struggle to find a cure. The author serves as narrator and the story is fleshed out with the many voices of a full cast production. Pierce reads her work in a slow and serious tone appropriate to the story, but some listeners might become frustrated with the pace. The other voice actors do their parts justice, but occasionally sound forced as they tackle some of Pierce's dialogue. As listeners are drawn into the production and caught up in the tension of the story, however, these minor problems become unimportant. The story stands well enough on its own for those unfamiliar with the previous titles in the series, but the emotional stakes are raised for those already acquainted with Briar. A good addition for audiobook collections, particularly those with the previous titles already on their shelves.–Jenna Innes, Grande Prairie Public Library, Alberta, Canada --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From AudioFile

Pierce's Circle of Magic series follows four young mages-in-training and their adventures at Winding Circle Temple. In this fourth and final book of the series, the former street thief named Briar Moss uses his magical talents and his understanding of herbs to find a cure for the fever that has infected his friends. Author Pierce works well with the cast, narrating the story as the young actors play the disciples at Winding Circle. Karam Anthony reads the part of Briar, while Katie Reed, Carmen Viviano-Crafts, and Gabrielle Barry-Caulfield play his three telepathically linked classmates. Although this is the last of the Circle of Magic series, the characters will return in Pierce's Magic Steps series. 5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing close to the quartet, Sep 23 2003
By ALS (GA, USA) - See all my reviews
This is probably the most exciting of the Circle of Magic quartet. When Briar's 'street rat' friend, Flick, takes sick with an never before seen disease, Briar must do all he can do to save her. But the disease is highly contagious, and soon about 198 out of every 200 people in the city are sick. Briar returns to Winding Circle Temple to help find the disease. They are getting closer to the cure when a splash of the disease essence infects a person very close to Briar, then he is torn between helping to find the cure and caring for her. The cure is discovered, but is it too late?

3.0 out of 5 stars Briar's Book, Sep 2 2003
By Jessica (California) - See all my reviews
This book was...okay is guess. Although it's well writen and not confusing or anything, it doesn't have the adventure or excitment found in many of the other Tamora Pierce books. I really like books in The Circle Opens much better, I recommend that instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite in COM!, Jun 7 2003
By Camilla Kaplan (Fairbanks, AK USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I loved Briar's Book. In it, the characters are finally developed enough that T.P. doesn't need to do more with them. The end was probably the most original conclusion I've ever read. The parts in Crane's 'lair' are probably my favorite, and he's so cool, I'm glad he got a bigger part in this book than in others, where he was close to a villian. I also really liked the parts with Tris and Daja (Sandry didn't really have a part, I don't think). The only complaint I had was, it should've been longer!
