Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Despite their repeated efforts, Sam and Lucy Bell, the loving yet infertile protagonists of British comedian Elton's (Popcorn) romantic comedy, cannot conceive a baby. When Lucy decides that their childlessness is at least partly due to the stress brought on by their efforts to conceive, she insists that they each keep diaries, to privately sort out their thoughts and emotions. The two diaries tell the story, with often hilariously divergent perspectives on the couple's reproductive struggle. Yet sperm tests, full-moon "bonks" on Primrose Hill, annoying New Age home remedies and Lucy's long-distance "adoption" of an endangered baby gorilla are not their only concerns. Sam, a frustrated would-be writer, is in the middle of a creative block, and he is also on the verge of losing his less-than-enthralling job as an executive at the BBC. Lucy, meanwhile, is being pursued romantically by a dashing but arrogant clientDshe's a film agentDand against her wishes, Sam is secretly using their troubles and diaries as inspiration for the screenplay he is finally writing. Despite his betrayal, Sam remains sweetly endearing. Elton captures the spirit of the modern bloke and the confusion that arises from a desire to be sensitive to one's partner's emotional needs while fulfilling traditional expectations of manhood. Laced with hip, witty asides, this he-said she-said comedy handily overcomes a somewhat sluggish start and manages to be both touching and laugh-out-loud funny. The book may receive some attention via the film Maybe Baby, based on this novel, directed by Elton and released in Australia this past August. (Dec.)

From Booklist

Trying to become pregnant can turn sex into an act of forced labor and drudgery. Fortunately, talents like the U.K.'s Elton can turn it all on its head to create a laughing-out-loud novel in which Lucy, using thermometers, New Age remedies, and specimen jars, "keeps trying," and husband Sam, who's a BBC executive, "keeps going along with it all." As this marital tragicomedy unfolds, readers are made privy to the couple's alternating diary entries, thus seeing them as they see each other and themselves, all too often a most incongruent mix. Though married for more than a decade, these two, like so many couples, seem to know precious little about each other and even less about themselves. Lucy's demands almost drive Sam insane, and the stress of "trying" eventually strains their marriage until they hilariously and hurtfully betray each other. Elton strives for a balance between tearful poignancy and belly laughs, and, happily, often succeeds in this clever, entertaining, and timely novel. Whitney Scott

3.0 out of 5 stars Light reading, April 10 2002
By John G. Hilliard (Toronto Canada) - See all my reviews

My wife read this book and then suggest I should as she thought is was funny. This is absolutely not an area I ever read books on so I was very sectional. Well the book did have some funny spots, it is also interesting for an American to read about like in the UK. The characters are light and easy to know - much like the story. This is not a deep read, just a light fun book that couples "trying" will probably enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Anything but Barren!, Mar 3 2002
By D. Austin "Stutty" (Germany) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have broken my word. I intended to write a review of every book I ordered through Amazon.com in the year 2002. Through no fault of Amazon, I found myself in the waning days of February with nothing to read. Of course, I desperately turned to Amazon and have ordered "The Dancing Wu Li Masters" which I am anxiously awaiting. In the meantime, my beloved wife said, "you must read THIS book." The book was "Inconceivable" by Ben Elton. She was right. I sucked up the 350+ pager in three days.

Lucy, the female lead, desperately wants to have a baby and has been actively trying for five years (six if you count that year of living dangerously.) Sam, her husband, is a bit non-committal about, well just about everying. There is so much that is really great about this book, and the way the story is told is what makes so much of it great. Each page if filled with journal entries written by both characters. Journal entries which Lucy has "suggested" they do to explore their feelings about having a child and the posibility of infertility. Along the way we hear stories about procedures, sperm tests, and frantic mystical attempts to conceive. I have never had a book make me laugh so loud and so often. Not only are Elton's words beautifully crafted, he does an amazing job of making the reader fully believe in Sam and Lucy through absolutely brilliant characterization. Beyond the laughter, the growth that Sam, and Sam and Lucy's relationship develop has brought a tear to more than one person's eye. And guys, don't be afraid to read this one; you married bloaks especially will see many truth's. I'm sure the ladies feel the same way, but being a male, I'm certain they are wrong. :D

To my Britsh friends - You know Elton, he's funny as hell. If you haven't read it, get it and begin immediately. If you fear the recommendation of an awful American, know that my wife and I borrowed this book from an English couple who insisted it was a must read.

To my American brothers and sisters - You will love this book more than the English do. We all know how much fun it is to watch them struggle in less than dignified situations. Two suggestions, don't take the criticisms Elton launches at Americans too seriously, they really do love us. Second - find a good web site to help out a little with the Britspeak. It's a good chance you don't know what snogging, the Tube, or bullocks are. It is worth the effort to "get" this book.

That's right folks, it gets a five. And well deserved, after all, it does have have lots of gags about knobs.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not Ben's best effort I'm afraid, Feb 18 2002
I have read all his other work over the years and come to expect twisting plot turns every bit as funny as his writing, however in this book nothing could be further from the case. It is due the format being basically a 'novel a clef' (a book made up of letters like Dangerous Liaisons) and is so predictable its annoying. Honestly -- you could start reading at page 208 (in my UK version) and still not miss anything in the conclusion. Except that is for as many similes as could humanly be fit onto each page. If I had a penny for each one I could recoup the cost of this book and pay for the cab ride there. The scenes are repetitious, and only slightly modified- as is much of the commentary and it seems Ben is writing just to listen to himself talk at times. It probably took as long to write as it does to read and if it wasn't from the "important and mouldbreaking" (Elton, 26) Ben Elton it would be very hard to find in bookstores. My advice: read Stark; read Gridlock; read Popcorn; read This Other Eden -- but don't waste your time on this. Or start at page 208.
