From Booklist
Gr. 7^-10. Cooney's story is several moral cuts above standard YA horror fare. Enrolling in a mysterious night school course, four California teens encounter an evil instructor--and their own worst character defects. As they torment a teacher and a fellow student, the four learn to accept the outcomes of moral choices that determine whether their spheres of influence in others' lives will be good or evil. They learn to accept individual responsibility for their actions instead of blaming the morality of their peer group, to pay more attention to other people in their lives, and to care beyond themselves. They also learn that inner selves are more important than surface appearances. Young adults will recognize themselves, or people they know, in these characters. Engrossing and well written, with references to contemporary adolescent culture, the novel will both entertain and enlighten YA readers.
