From School Library Journal

YA-The fifth book in the series is set just after Lincoln's presidential election. The Southern states are calling for secession and there is talk of war. Bronwyn Llyr, the niece of Seneca Falls, NY, librarian Glynis Tryon, has left school and taken a job as an operative with the Pinkerton Detective Agency. Her first assignment is to accompany a railroad owner to Alabama and learn about possible plans to confiscate the train line. Bronwyn accidentally overhears a conversation about a secret plan called Equus, which she correctly fears is an assassination plot. When her identity becomes suspect, she flees north and meets up with a young man escaping involuntary servitude in the Mobile shipyards. Together they ride freight cars to Virginia, and then steal a small boat to sail up the Chesapeake Bay to Baltimore. Bronwyn thinks the assassination will take place when the president-elect passes through the city, and she relies on old friends of her aunt to help foil the plan. Teens will enjoy watching the two young people try to figure out their deepening relationship as they strive to save the life of Abraham Lincoln.

From Booklist

Glynis Tryon, the intrepid Seneca Falls librarian, returns to solve a new mystery set on the brink of the American Civil War. When her feisty niece, Bronwen Llyr, defies her family and joins the Pinkerton Detective Agency as a female operative, Glynis is catapulted into a tumultuous chain of events that could have catastrophic results for the entire nation. Assigned to investigate the condition and the status of vulnerable southern railroads, Bronwen arrives in Montgomery, Alabama, as the town stands poised to celebrate the election of Jefferson Davis as the president of the fledgling Confederacy. Determined to remain apolitical while performing her undercover duties, she is nevertheless thrust into the midst of a sinister conspiracy when she overhears a group of radicals orchestrating a plot to assassinate President-elect Abraham Lincoln. Alarmed that her cover may have been compromised, Bronwen sends Glynis a frantic wire enlisting her aunt's assistance. Steeped in actual fact, the fifth installment in this excellent series will appeal to fans of intelligent historical mysteries featuring independent feminist heroines. 5.0étoiles sur 5 One of the best Monfredo books, Sep 23 2002
Par Siobhan Noble (San Francisco, CA United States) - Voir tous mes commentaires
This review is from: Stalking Horse (Paperback)
This book was dark, moody and probably one of Monfredo's best. heroine Bronwyn Llyr and her compatriots are well drawn and seen in complex terms. The history, as always, is well researched and fascinating -- this time focusing on a pre-inagural assasination plot on Abraham Lincoln. Her historical mysteries are some of the best in the genre. Occasionally, Monfredo has let her characters steps on the soap box a bit too much, but this book avoids doing that -- partially because Bronwyn herself tries to avoid politics on the whole.

3.0étoiles sur 5 Great history, good mystery, flawed characters, Sep 17 2002
Par Un client
This review is from: Stalking Horse (Paperback)
Miriam Grace Monfredo's "Seneca Falls" mysteries are
very good reads. The history is always first-rate, and
the mysteries are compelling. The same holds true for
The Stalking Horse, except the not-believable Bronwen Llyr
as the heroine, and Jacques Sundown as the "deus ex machina."

In short, Bronwen is not credible as a mid-19th century
young woman. She is a late-20th century "supergirl" cast
anachronistically back into 1860 (especially given the
ridulous and confining layers of 19th century women's clothing).

As for Sundown - too much the stereotypical and stoic "noble savage" American Indian with "eyes like a wolf." His characterization, and overly convenient intrusions out of nowhere
to kill the villain, are ridiculous.

None of the above implies that I did not enjoy the mystery, and especially the history. But even good historical novelists like Ms. Monfredo must avoid historical anachronisms and stereotypes to be credible.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Review by Allen P. Bristow, author of THE PINKERTON EYE, Déc 31 2001
Par Allen Bristow (Atascadero, ca United States) - Voir tous mes commentaires
This review is from: Stalking Horse (Paperback)
A thrilling and accurate tale of the Southern attempt on President Lincoln's life as he traveled through Baltimore enroute to Washington for his inauguration. The author's fictional
Pinkerton female operatives are well cast, generally dependable and loyal to their mission. Of course they are stimulated by wartime patriotism. For a sketch of a not so dependable "Pink Rose" in later peacetime adventures see THE PINKERTON EYE.
