Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

A plot description of this contemporary problem novel may make it sound like a kind of Cinderella story, but Dessen's (Someone Like You) ironic sense of humor and her knack for creating characters with both quirky personalities and universal emotions set her book apart. Colie's fitness-celebrity mom (a female version of Richard Simmons) long ago motivated her to lose 45.5 pounds, but Colie feels just as insecure as she did when she was overweight, and she is a pariah at school. During Colie's 15th summer, her mother goes on an extended tour of Europe, and Colie is sent to outlandish Aunt Mira in Colby, N.C. There Colie is influenced by a singular group of mentors: the young women next door, Isabel and Morgan, who give Colie a makeover as well as a waitressing job; Mira's young boarder, Norman, who has moved out of his bullying auto-dealer dad's house so he can pursue a career in art; and Mira herself, a greeting-card illustrator who is as enormous and eccentric as she is immune to the ostracism of the locals. As readers will anticipate, Colie begins a happy metamorphosis; unexpectedly, her transformation is interrupted by the arrival of a mean-mouthed schoolmate who is all too eager to cut Colie down. Readers will lap up the snappy dialogue, colorful episodes and unexpected pearls of wisdom. The lessons Colie learns about beauty, none of them new, come across with freshness and vitality. Ages 12-up. (Sept.)

This review is from: Keeping The Moon (Paperback)
Keeping the Moon is by far my favorite Sarah Dessen book. A recurring theme in this book is change. It has a wonderful message and is interesting throughout the book. This is a must read for any young teenage girl, especially going through change in their life. :]

3.0 out of 5 stars [..], Feb 2 2007
This review is from: Keeping The Moon (Paperback)
I thought this book was ok. I found some of it a little predicatable. Non of the characters really stood out for me. Isobel was good but just a little too always preaching. I didn't like Norman either. Definately check out This Lullaby, Just Listen and the Truth about forever though. I really enjoyed those ones.

2.0 out of 5 stars I'm Throwing Away the Moon, Nov 10 2003
Keeping the Moon by Sarah Dessen had the potential to be a great book. The characters were creative and there was a good setting, but the plot was not very original. There are a million books with the same plot; "Former overweight girl with low esteem learns to love herself." It's so worn out. I picked this book up thinking it would be better than that. Unfortunately, it wasn't.
It starts out where Colie Sparks proclaims that her summer is going to be horrible because she is being sent to stay with her aunt Mira while her mom tours Europe. When Colie gets to her aunt's house, she finds index cards next to everything saying things like, "RIGHT FAUCET DRIPS. TIGHTEN WITH WRENCH AFTER USING." Colie feels like she's in Oz, except with no one to help her find her way.
That is, until she meets Isabelle and Morgan at the Last Chance Grill. They're waitresses there, and they hire Colie as well. Now she has friends, but her summer still looks like it's going to be horrible.
I guess the main reason I didn't like this book was because it contained too much drama. It was also too predictable. This book might've been decent, but the author had to go and write the ending the same way many young adult novels end...with an overly romantic happy ending. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone, with the exception of those individuals who enjoy books with the same, worn out plot.
