Product Description

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8–Narrator Allan Corduner expertly carries listeners into the dark, dreary realm of Grim Tuesday in the second installment of The Keys to the Kingdom series by Garth Nix (Scholastic, 2004). The novel takes place one day after young Arthur Penhaligon has been thrust into the complicated world of The House, and conquered the formidable Mister Monday. Hoping to go back to his normal life, he is again catapulted into this new world when his family's and the world's finances are being threatened. This time, Arthur must enter the Lower House that is in jeopardy from the excessive mining of Nothing by the greedy Grim Tuesday. With the help of a ragtag group of creatures, Arthur must gain possession of the Will and the Second Key in order to fight off the Grim's Denizens and Nithlings. Fantasy readers will have to sink their teeth into this one. Nix has created a complex world, with specific rules, lore, and vocabulary. The quality of the recording is excellent, but young adults should read or listen to the first book in the series, Mister Monday (Scholastic, 2003), in order to enjoy this one. Corduner captures the feel of Arthur's excitement, fear, surprise, and wonder, and creates voices for all of the different characters, allowing the story to unfold at just the right pace. This title in a projected seven book series is for Garth Nix fans and those who have already become enmeshed in The Keys to the Kingdom.–Jo-Ann Carhart, East Islip Public Library, NY

From AudioFile

The second book in The Keys to the Kingdom series is another treat for young fantasy enthusiasts. The youthful hero, Arthur, has barely returned to normal life on Earth after saving the world on Monday. He awakens on Tuesday to the dreadful realization that he must return to the mysterious Kingdom, not only to restore balance in the crazy netherworld, but also to preserve his family and real life. Reader Allan Corduner enriches the saga of Arthur's weird challenges as he attempts to retrieve the Second Key from Grim Tuesday. Corduner voices the imperious tones of the Kingdom's authorities as believably as the tentative bravery of the schoolboy conqueror. 4.0étoiles sur 5 And you thought Mondays were bad, Juil 13 2006

(TOP 10 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
If you're going to read this book, I strongly recommend that you make sure that you've read "Mister Monday" first. That way you see, I don't have to explain all about the Architect and the Will, and the seven hidden fragments and the treacherous trustees and all that. Just call me lazy if you like.

Our young and most unlikely hero has barely returned from Mister Monday's domain, when the telephone hotline starts ringing again. Arthur quickly learns that Grim Tuesday has found a convenient loophole in the Trustee agreement, and that all Mister Monday's substantial debts have been passed on to him as the new Master of the Lower House. Grim T. means to collect one way or the other, and as the world's economy gets turned on its end, Arthur realizes that he has no choice but to go back and sort it all out, and of course get the second key and some added responsibility that he can well do without.

Greedy Grim Tuesday runs a huge "nothing" mine using slave labor, and makes all the gadgets and widgets and doodads needed by the Days and anybody with the right currency. Lots of new and deadly creatures await Arthur, some of whom are allergic to salt and some to silver, but all have the common goal of inflicting upon him as much pain as possible. With the help of his friend Leaf (from book one) he finally finds the entrance to Tuesday's mineshafts, and begins his new quest, going deep, deep undercover as one of Tuesday's slaves.

Fortunately for him, he gets a little help from Suzy Turquoise Blue, Japeth the walking Thesaurus, Captain Shelvocke the sea-faring brother of the Pied Piper, and to a lesser extent a hairy, materialistic bit of fluff formally known as "eyebrow". Soon he's sailing off into very strange waters to retrieve the second fragment of the Will, with a heavy heart, a broken leg and almost more problems than he can bear.

Exciting and imaginative, although sometimes a tad long on description, Nix wraps this one up rather quickly at the end, and gives a tantalizing glimpse into Wednesday's woes. A must-read if you've completed your Monday reading.

5.0étoiles sur 5 one of my FAVORITE BOOKS!!!, Avril 2 2005
Par AvidReader15 (Alberta, Canada) - Voir tous mes commentaires
This is one of the best books that I have EVER read! It was even better than "Mister Monday". Arthur, master of the Lower House, finds himself in even more trouble than before. The Morrow Days just won't leave him alone! Is a normal life just too much to ask? Well, it looks that way...He just got back and already he is being dragged into the magical world of the House. A must read book for ALL ages!!!

4.0étoiles sur 5 A very grim Tuesday, Mai 24 2004
Arthur left The House on Monday thinking he wouldn't have to go back for another five to six years. Boy was he wrong. It turns out that Grim Tuesday, who is in charge of the Far Reaches, has some different ideas of his own and is threatning Arthur's position of the Head of the Lower Atruim. Not only is the Grim stirring up chaos in the House, but in Arthur's world too. The Grim's Grotesques, his seven ugly, mishapen servants, are up to no good and Arthur's family is on the verge of a financial crisis. So once again Arthur must return to The House and retrieve the Second Key from Grim Tuesday to save everybody. Soon he finds himself a worker in the Grim's Pit and befriends Japeth, a Denizen that talks like a thesaurous. Of course Suzy is also there to help, after being sent by the Will to assist Arthur. Soon Suzy and Arthur find themselves battling Nithilings, stealing a Sunship, harpooing sunsprites, and trying to knock some senses into the Second Clause of the Will, which is in a bear form. Of course everything leads to the final showdown with the Grim, but unlike Monday, this won't be a contest of strength and swords, but creativity.

The second book in this series was a definite improvement over the first one. Japeth provided some much needed comic relief and Soot was just funny. I also loved Tom, and I definitely hope he returns again. Oh, and the bear was a definite improvement over the previous Clause of the Will. Overall much better than the first one. I can't wait to read Drowned Wednesday and meet Lady Wednesday! (yeah a woman!)
