Product Description

From Amazon.com

Asthma kills 6,000 people a year. Respiratory illnesses affect millions more. According to Teresa Hale, asthmatics and others with respiratory illnesses are breathing wrong. "We have been led to believe that deep breathing is good for us because it increases our oxygen intake. In fact, the reverse is true. The more we breathe, the less oxygen actually reaches the cells of our bodies," says Hale in Breathing Free: The Revolutionary 5-Day Program to Heal Asthma, Emphysema, Bronchitis, and Other Respiratory Ailments. Her breathing program, Breath Connection, teaches you to change your breathing patterns so that you won't need to wheeze, breathe heavily, or take gulps of air after exertion. Hale promises that five days on this program will reduce your need for medications, and regular practice often increases metabolism and leads to weight loss.

Breathing Free gives a self-test to assess your breathing and teaches several techniques to improve it. Hale explains how to adapt the program for mild, moderate, or severe asthma; emphysema; bronchitis; panic attacks; general health; and children with asthma. She also suggests dietary guidelines.

Hale's program is based on the work of Konstantin Buteyko of the former Soviet Union. It is easy to understand, but will take time and effort to master. But Hale says you have a choice: "Stay where you are, with your daydreams and your deteriorating health, or take control and make some effort to effect permanent change." Hale founded Britain's renowned Hale Clinic, whose clients have included Princess Diana, the Duchess of York, Tina Turner, Richard Gere, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. --Joan Price --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

From Library Journal

Anyone who has ever experienced difficulty breathing due to asthma, emphysema, bronchitis, or any number of other respiratory diseases will find hope and encouragement in the latest title by Hale and Simpson. The Breath Connection, a series of exercises developed at the world-renowned Hale Clinic in London and the result of 45 years of research, has led to the discovery that some 200 diseases, many respiratory in nature, are the result of dysfunctional breathing, or overbreathing. The Control Pause, a technique of holding the breath, allows the sufferer to restore the body's natural levels of carbon dioxide, oxygen, and pH. Hale, the founder of the clinic, and Simpson, a member of the U.K.'s Guild of Health Writers, throw in an extra bonus by including the breathing exercise program on cassette number six. These tapes have the potential to help hundreds, if not thousands, of library patrons suffering from any of these debilitating diseases. Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Wake up medical profession and learn something new, Mar 2 2006
By P Blake (New York, USA) - See all my reviews
Asthma free naturally. The medical profession have overlooked probably the only factor guaranteed to help solve your asthma. For some reason, people are not told to close their mouth or to correct their breathing. Why is this?
Is there too much income to be earned from the existing structure? The Asthma Society who are suppossed to be our friends are funded by drug companies and so are afraid to rock the boat.
Give asthmatics inhalers for the rest of their life and spend no research on hyperventilation. The medical profession have a lot to answer for.
Meanwhile millions suffer- people like you and me.

If you are asthmatic- you will understand what I mean from reading this book. I cannot understand the logic, of why this is not taught to every adult and child.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable, Jun 21 2004
By A Customer
I took the Hale Clinic course with Alexander Stalmatsky, and after 30+ years of asthma I am at the very least symptom free. You wouldnt believe the other health benefits from learning to breath less unless you experience them first hand. The one thing I will say is that it takes effort and time to unlearn your current breathing patterns. So don't expect it to be easy or fast. You need to give it months.

The key to the approach is practicing shallow breathing interspersed with different types of pauses. While I think everyone would benefit from taking a course or consulting with a professional, some may be able to learn it just by reading this book. Though I would recommend connecting with others doing it, for support and help with the nuances. There are online support groups on yahoo.

1.0 out of 5 stars There is something not right here, April 15 2004
By "phredsw" (South Africa) - See all my reviews
I recently bought this book as I am an emphysema sufferer. On completing the book there were a few questions that I had and went to the HALE CLINIC website only to discover that they no longer seem to offer Buteyko breathing as one of their 'products'. The US web site also no longer exists!
I sent an email to the HALE clinic to which they have never bothered to reply.
All this gave me a very negative feeling about the whole subject.
Maybe somebody else can shed some light on this.
