From the moment Helena is rescued from the forest mists by a young horseman, her heart is held captive by this mysterious young man. In any but a gifted author's hand this tale could seem trite and contrived. However, Holt creates elaborate characters and sets the narrative in the fabled and romantic Black Forest of the Austro-Hungarian Empire at the time of the Napoleonic Wars. The reader will soon be caught up in the intrigues that keep Helena from living the uncomplicated life of a bookseller's daughter. A grand example of the gothic romance. I am such a huge Victoria Holt fan! Every story she writes is better than the one before and when it comes to gothic romance (in my opinion) not many writers can do it as well as this writer. Her characters are always exciting and her plots anything but predictable or boring. This is one book you don't want to miss! (Highly Recommended Novel). Take "10" Ms. Holt you deserve it!
