From Publishers Weekly

Strange creatures whose existence is threatened by loggers require human donors to survive. PW said that this novel "may well leave readers with some soul-searching questions." Ages 8-12. (Oct.)

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-5?Doug and his precocious younger sister move to a deep forest when their botanist father has the opportunity to study a rare fungus. Before they leave, Doug's friend warns him to stay away from the shadowy woods or the "beasties" will get him. It's not long before the siblings are lured into an underground passage and meet up with the creatures. At this point, the hairs on readers' arms will start to rise and the plot takes the bizarre twist so familiar in Sleator's titles. Doug, presented with several dilemmas, is forced to make uncomfortable decisions without really understanding his choices. Using his trademark techniques, Sleator sets the scene within everyday situations, introduces unusual plot elements with vivid description, develops the story line by leading readers though a labyrinth, and builds to an explosive ending with a message. The Beasties follows this format and includes sibling rivalry, forest conservation, respect for those who are less valued or understood, choices and decisions, friendship, and a healthy dose of the creepy. This is a quick read, with lots of suspense, but its real effectiveness lies in the way it introduces and explores issues of human choice and compassion, and the lingering questions after the reading is complete. The Beasties invites discussion as it delves into issues for which there are no easy answers. Sure to be popular with the author's many fans and a good choice to introduce his work to others.?Molly S. Kinney, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh

2.0étoiles sur 5 Terrible Ending... Chose a better book!, Jui 22 2004
This review is from: Beasties (Paperback)
"The Beasties" was fairly well done but with some serious unrealism thrown in. First off was how the little sister who was 10 years old kept getting the brother to do things like explore the cave with her and stuff. I think from very early on the older brother would have used simple brute force against his sister instead of letting her get him involved with the creatures. The ending was absolutely terrible. The older brother became so attached to the creatures in about one or two days even though the warnings he was given and the hate he had for them from the previous few days. I suggest that you read a different book. It might be worth the few hours it takes some people to read it but others will feel that they have done nothing but waste their time.

1.0étoiles sur 5 O.K. for what it is, but nothing impressive..., Mai 27 2004
This review is from: Beasties (Paperback)
This book did not really impress me... it seemed o.k. considering that it IS a preteen novel... but the characters where so undeveloped and the plotline seemed so repetitive... "the kids go underground with the beasties, they come out, they go back, they come out..." And the protagonist (main character for all of you kiddies out there), Doug, seemed such a wimp considering he was 15-year-old guy. Most 15-year-old guys I know would much rather be with their girlfriend or playing on some gaming system rather than being creeped out with their younger sister about some beings that steal body parts. And the whole ending thing? What was up with that? Very pathetic and again, unrealistic. This story seems to be plagued with undevoped false characters and unrealism. Two big thumbs way down.

5.0étoiles sur 5 The Beasties, Avril 23 2004
Par Un client
This review is from: Beasties (Paperback)
I loved this book! It was very very detailed and easy to follow. The ending was great, it wasn't a cliff hanger ending. The whole story-line was grand, with a combo of horror, suspense, and mystery who wouldn't enjoy it. This story will keep you in your seat, it is a definite thriller.

The best part was when the author first introduced the creatures known as Beasties. These are the horific monsters the main charectar is warned about in the begining of the book. They are small cretins with long razor sharp teeth. They can talk and are very much humane although humans are there sworn enemy. They don't kill people, but they do have a doctor Beasty who amputates human body parts and puts them on the beasties.

The most vivid story elements were the charectars and the conflict. The charectars were very detailed and personified.you can really relate to the charectars minds and there behaviors. The conflict was great it shows a horific monster and shows it is only trying to survive. It's another human versus beast senarios. It was great and very detailed throughout.I loved every aspect of this book the made it very detailed and well written so you kept up very easily. This was a great book you should read it to.
