5.0 out of 5 stars A great read, Jan 30 2004
By S. Fox (Mountain Home, AR USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Smith (Hardcover)
Be sure to see this re-release of Smith. Garfield weaves a twisted tale of thieving, murder, double-crossing, and ultimately friendship and belonging. His descriptions of 18th century England place readers in the story and they come to like the pick-pocket, Smith, as he struggles to unravel a mystery and learn who he can and cannot trust as he travels among the Town's underbelly and its upper crust. There are more twists and turns in this story than a darner's needle and you'll not guess the ending.

4.0 out of 5 stars Humour, details, suspense, several twists - hope this helps!, Feb 16 2000
This story is about a 12-year-old pickpocket known as Smith. One day he picks the pocket of a gentleman, and only a few minutes later he witnesses the murder of the old man. What he has picked is wanted by the employer of the murderers... Smith gets into all kinds of trouble...
The story has a little humour... well, it made me smile anyway... and some very detailed paragraphs, and language used by the characters were realistic, not perfect like in some stories, as realistic as the way we really talk. Even though the story is old, published in the 1960s, this was a good book and got me hooked...
