Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Jenna Blake has greater concerns than making friends or choosing a major during her first semester at Somerset University near Boston. At her parents insistence, she accepts a job as an administrative assistant to the medical examiner at Somerset Medical Center; her new position gives Blake insightAvia Golden's (Ghost Roads) well-rendered autopsy descriptionsAinto some bizarre campus events involving people suddenly seized by uncontrollable violence. Unwittingly at the center of an international conspiracy (which draws the attention of the FBI and the Centers for Disease Control), Blake is marked by a killer whose technique demonstrates Golden's sense of the truly morbid and her knack for uncomfortably realistic medical dialogue. The college atmosphere lends itself to the unpredictable plot, and Golden does well in developing the personalities of minor characters, including Jenna's new college friends, her parents and her supervising doctor. The killer and his motive, on the other hand, are never fully developed. Jenna will be back soon, however; this title launches Golden's Body of Evidence series.

Book Description

"The first day at college, my professor dropped dead. The second day, I assisted at his autopsy. Let's hope I don't have to go through four years of this...."

When Jenna Blake starts her freshman year at Somerset University, she's not only living on her own for the first time, she's moving closer to the father she never really knew. It's an exciting time, filled with new faces and new challenges, not to mention parties and guys and...corpses?

Jenna feels torn about her future. She'd like to be a doctor like her mother, but she can't stand the sight of blood. Her father, a criminology professor, thinks he has the answer and sends her to interview for a job with the medical examiner -- an interview that takes place in the middle of an autopsy.

When a congressional aide goes violently insane and then drops dead, the pathology team at Somerset Medical Center discovers that his brain was ravaged with disease -- and loaded with insect larvae. As Jenna starts her new job, she is drawn into a web of terrifying disease, dangerous politics, and intriguing mystery. And when one of her professors ends up dead, she starts making connections even the police haven't seen...connections which will bring her face to face with a pair of killers: one medical, and one all too human. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too, Aug 24 2007
This review is from: Body Bags (Mass Market Paperback)
Although this book is touted as a young adult read, it's great for anyone who has an interest in shows such as CSI, Bones, Forensic Files, or anything to do with death investigation. I found it thoroughly entertaining, informative, and interesting, and have already ordered the other books in the series--of which there are many.

Jenna Blake is a typical eighteen-year-old, leaving her mother's home and setting off for her freshman year at college. Her mother, a surgeon, and her almost-estranged father, a professor at the same university she's attending, both have their own ideas about what Jenna should do with her life. Jenna, who would like to do something in the medical field, has two great fears--passing out at the sight of blood, and causing a patient's death. Her father, a lawyer who teaches instead of practices, thinks he has the perfect solution to her problem by getting her a job as a pathology assistant to the Medical Examiner. Somerset University has its own medical center and hospital right on the grounds, and Jenna's willing to give the job a try. The fact that her interview takes place during an autopsy is both disturbing and fascinating.

And then weird things start happening on campus. One of her professors, who also happens to be one of her father's dearest friends, goes crazy in class, kills a student, and drops dead. Jenna feels she has no choice but to attend his autopsy, and soon finds herself embroiled in finding out what killed him. When the M.E., FBI, a doctor from the Center for Disease Control, and two local Somerset detectives discover that a "supergerm" involving an insect like a botfly from Costa Rica is involved, everyone gets scared. But it's only Jenna who fears that there's more to this simple explanation than meets the eye. There's a conspiracy underway, and she sets out to discover what it is--to both the detriment of herself and her father.

Once I started reading BODY BAGS, I couldn't put the book down! I wanted to know what happened next, and who the bad guy was. I have to say the ending was a complete surprise to me, which is also indicative of a good read. You won't go wrong with the first in the BODY OF EVIDENCE series, and, if you're like me, you'll be chomping at the bit to get your hands on the next book.

The only thing that disappointed me about the ending of this book was that Mr. Golden failed to give us an answer as to how the bad guy was infecting people with the bug. Although we did find out why, we don't know how, and I really wanted to know! Nevertheless, this is a great read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Thrill! By: Monica, May 2 2004
By Monica C. (Newark, Delaware) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Body Bags (Mass Market Paperback)
Body Bags, by Christopher Golden was an excellent stroy, filled with adventure, and much suspense. I listened to the audio version of the stroy and the narrator sounded just like an adolescent. The stroy starts off with 18 year old jenna Blake, leaving for college. Her parents are divorced and the college she chose; Somerset University , is where her father is a professor. Jenna goes to college stil undecided about her major. She wants to do something involving medicne, but can't stand the idea of killing someone by accident. Her father suggests that she be a medical examiner. A medical examnier is the person that performs autopsy on the dead to figure out there cause of death. She takes an intership as a meidcal examiner's assistant to the chief ME in the town. Her father helped her recieve the job. The first autopy she helps perform is very gruesome. The team finds maggots in the young man's brain. Jenna is intrigued by the discovery. She is willing to help solve how the maggots entered the man's brain. Meanwhile she meets regularly with her father to discuss his life, adn Jenna's. She meets her fathers 'housemates'. She meets her dad's friend Jose. Jenna has met hime before and likes him. He states that he is researching a Costa Rican president whom he dislikes and is trying to remove from office. He talked of a recent trip to Costa Rica. then Jenna remembered that the young man she performed the autopsy on had too just returned from Costa Rica. then while at Jose's class ( international relations) he spazzes out killing a student and dying at Jenna's feet. She also performs the autopsy on her late professor. He too, had maggots in his brian. Read or listen to the excellent thriller to find out how it ends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Start to a Refreshing New Series, Nov 20 2003
By Erika Sorocco (Southern California, USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Body Bags (Mass Market Paperback)
Jenna Blake is 18-years-old, and is finally heading out to college, where she can finally be alone. Without her mother breathing down her neck, not that she minds her mother too much. Somerset University is fantastic, for the first two days. Partying, meeting new people, hanging out. All of that changes when she gets a job working with a medical examiner, and odd things start happening. On her first day of college her professor dies at her feet, and immediately Jenna realizes that he has been infected with a virus from Costa Rica. From there, havoc ensues at every turn. Jenna is now a huge part in a mystery, that includes politics, disease, murder, and more.

Being a fan of Golden's work with the BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER novels I just knew that I had to pick-up BODY BAGS. It's nice to see a character who is just beginning college, as most books available to teens feature characters who are just beginning high school. Jenna is a refreshing new character, who is fun, yet very intelligent at the same time. Her friends, Yoshiko, Melody, and Hunter make the story much more enjoyable; as does the small side-story, featuring Jenna and a love interest, which doesn't turn out the way that I'd hoped. Overall this is a fantastic book, and I am happy that I had the chance to read it. I will be picking up THIEF OF HEARTS on my next trip to the bookstore. A must-have for all fans of science fiction, mystery, or horror.
