Product Description

From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up-In this second book in the series, Holly and her cousins Amanda and Nicole are still ensconced in a feud with the evil Deveraux warlocks. Nicole is traveling throughout Europe trying to deny that she is a witch and to avoid giving in to the guilt she feels for having abandoned her family and the coven. Ghostly ancestors from both sides-some decomposing, some inhabiting their relatives' bodies, some seemingly intact-help to fuel the animosity between the clans. Unfortunately, the great battle (and the assumed climax of the story) stops abruptly, without giving readers any clue as to why. The plot is confusing and transports characters from one time period to another, one astral plane to the next, with little explanation. There are too many characters and too many subplots to keep track of, and nothing seems resolved or completely fleshed out. There is not a single sympathetic character in the bunch, and it is difficult to tell throughout much of the book the difference between the good guys and the bad.

3.0étoiles sur 5 Not as good as the first one, Sep 2 2004

This review is from: Curse (Mass Market Paperback)
I loved the scenes with Nicole in Spain with the Spanish Coven and I anticipated them eagerly when not reading them, but as for the rest of the book, it doesn't quite measure up to the mystical quality of the first book.

All of the characters are out of character, the plot moves around way too much, and there are too many new characters to deal with. It didn't feel like the authors' hearts were in this book too much, especially after Nicole was taken to England and Holly sacrificed Hecate.

There are a lot of things in this book that aren't quite up to par with the last one, and I haven't even finished reading it. Frankly, I'm too scared to see what is going to happen next because I know that it will be an unpleasant shock rather than a good one.

Read it for yourself, though. It may appeal more to you than it does to me.

4.0étoiles sur 5 nice sequel, Nov. 10 2003

holly and amanda are continuing their feud with the devereaux warlocks. nicole on the other hand has fled to parts unknown to escape the magic that nearly cost them their lives. holly is now the lead of the coven and her powers are growing past anything she ever expected. this book is not quite as good as the first one, but it will keep you enthralled with evil plots and schemes, lots of history lessons and life and death situations. i read it in 24 hours so it was not all bad.

3.0étoiles sur 5 Better than the last one, ok book for teens., Mai 20 2003
Par Un client
This review is from: Curse (Mass Market Paperback)
Plot holes still plague the story.

The main problem most people will have is that there is no hero. The main character, Holly, devolves from Anti-hero to villain, and deserves to die every bit as much as the people she's fighting. Of the support characters, the actual "good gals and guys" are weak, whiney, and ineffective. There is very little real depth to the characters.

This is the second time the climactic battle description just stops, instead of ending. We get to the start of the climax at the end of one chapter, and the next chapter starts 10 minutes later looking back on what just happened.

The focus on how majic works is very unclear, as is how these kids are learning majic.

All things considered, if you need a break from Harlequin Romance novels and soap operas, this is fine, but otherwise you may want to look at a different series like Xanth, Mythadventures, Spellsinger, Hitch-hiker's Guide, or even Star Wars.
