Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

This sequel to Among the Hidden picks up with Luke finally out of hiding and going to boarding school under an assumed identity. "While Haddix is often able to capture the suspense of her earlier work," wrote PW, "this installment gets mired in too many confusing details." Ages 9-14. (Oct.)

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-7-Luke, a third child, hides quietly in his house, eluding the Population Police because he lives in a society in which families are only allowed two children. Now he has a chance to come out of the shadows by taking on an assumed identity and leaving home. This sequel to Among the Hidden (S & S, 1998) has Luke, now Lee, entering the Hendricks School for boys and a completely new existence where he feels lost and confused by his surroundings. He has gone from a furtive solitary existence to one in which he is never alone, from being desperate for company to being hazed by his classmates, particularly his roommate, "the Jackal." Lee learns to cope with the changes before him by escaping through the door to the outside. The story is artfully told with suspense and interesting twists. As Lee's confusion dissipates, readers begin to see what is going on. Lee is a fully realized character, developing courage and a true sense of self. Peripheral characters are not as fully developed, serving solely to further the story. Repeated references to Jen, another third child from the first book and martyr to all third children, may cause readers to wonder what they have missed. By the end of the story, the main character evolves into "L" and the author has created the possibility for another sequel. This compelling read can be enjoyed alone but it's sure to leave readers wanting to know the whole story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just like the first it makes you feel as if you are Luke, Jun 24 2004
By Christian (Franklin, N.H. USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Among the Impostors (Paperback)
I thought that the first one was thrilling so why not pick up the second....NO it was more then thrilling, it's sends you deep into Luke's mind and lets you know everything about what he's thinking. I began reading the first and second book in class, sence i am in 6th grade my teacher loved to read it to us, but when she'd stop at every chapter, we'd moan and say "READ MORE READ MORE". Luke is sent off to a strange school named "Hendricks school for boys", he's nervose, and suddenly has a regret to not staying home hidding. On his fake name, Lee Grant, who had died not soon before in a skiing accident. No one's telling him what classes to go to, what demerits are, and just about everything elase.....One day looking around for a class to go to he see's a door, a door thats unlocked, open, and it's to the outside. He's out there before he even knows it. H'es in freedom and thats the way he wants it to be. At night he's teesed and taunted by a boy he calls Jackal boy. But Luke descovers another secret that Jason him self might be another third child, and his gang there all third children to. But Jackal boys hidding something, something tarrfing, that Luke dosent want to know untill it's to late. Read....People.....red this book you need to, for me...for Luke....For Jen...for Margret.

4.0 out of 5 stars Among the Imposters, April 8 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Among the Impostors (Paperback)
Are you a third child? Well Luke Garner is and he has to hide the rest of his life from the Population Police because third children are illegal. They'll take him away if he is found out. Now for the first time Luke is living outside with others at Hendricks school for boys. Mr. Talbot, the man who is taking care Luke leaves a note hopefully to say what to do and when and where are his classes. But when Luke reads it all that it says is
" Blend in". Then one day Luke sees a door to the outside. No one knows what the outside will bring Luke. Luke changed because now he knows not to go anywhere he doesn't know. The conflict is third children against Population police. Remember don't wander off any where don't know of. Or you could be in trouble is the theme. I give this book four stars because this book was great but it did not deserve five stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars among the impostors, Mar 3 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Among the Impostors (Paperback)
Everything changed quickly. Location, home, clothes and his identity Mr.Talbot made sure Luke would be safe at a school for boys called Hendricks School. Mr. Talbot didn't know if he would be happy there. Yearning to read the note Mr. Talbot gave him before abandoning Luke in the windowless school and erratic flow of boys into random classrooms. Luke will keep his identity hidden.Luke seemed to find happiness finding a door to outside and all strangeness of his new life.Mr.Hendricks is owner of the school Luke went to. Luke was a third child to smuggle into Hendricks school for boys.Luke lived with his mom,dad and two brothers,Mark and Matthew on the farm. Luke was a quite boy and never been away from home.At the time I picked this book that started off a wee bit slow. I should of read the first book, because it was a series and I would of had a better understanding of the books happenings.
