Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Despite its buoyant tone, this blend of fairy tale, ghost story, romance and mystery proves a disappointment. First novelist Atherton creates a potentially appealing heroine in bewitched and bewildered Lori Shepherd, but never places her in danger, thus sacrificing suspense. Recently divorced and newly bereaved by her beloved mother's death, Lori is scraping by as an office temp in Boston when she receives a letter from a Boston law firm informing her of the death in England of Miss Dimity Westwood. Lori is shocked because she had thought adventurous Dimity was her mother's fictional creation, the star of made-up bedtime stories. Courtly lawyer William Willis and his attentive son Bill inform Lori that Dimity left instructions that she and Bill go to her Cotswolds cottage to prepare a collection of "Aunt Dimity" stories for publication. They find the cottage haunted by the ghost of Dimity, who blocks their efforts to trace the secret of her WW II romance with a gallant flier. That all ends happily comes as a surprise to none but Lori.

From Library Journal

Atherton's first mystery combines a strong sense of traditional English fare with an insistent gothic spirit. Suffering from her recent divorce, her mother's death, and an erratic income, Lori Shepherd receives notice from a prestigious Boston law firm that she must travel to England in order to meet the requirements of a will. While visiting her benefactor's "haunted" cottage with lawyer friend Bill, she uncovers important clues relating to a World War II mystery. Lightweight, nicely written material complete with a few heart palpitations.

4.0 out of 5 stars Warm and Cozy Read, Oct 17 2007
By N. Manning (Ontario, Canada) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Aunt Dimity's Death (Hardcover)
This book was pure joy! What a charming, delightful story. A down-and-out recent divorcee finds she's come into some money when a relative she didn't know about dies. Only she must travel to England first to settle some matters and uncover the secret surrounding Aunt Dimity. This book is classified as a mystery but there really isn't much mystery to it. It involves a secret, but the book defies genre. It starts out as a fairy tale, turns into a ghost story and all the while is a romance. The characters were a delight and I found myself smiling the whole time I was reading this book. This book is most certainly a "cozy" and a warm, friendly read. I'm looking forward to meeting these characters again in the next book. Recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars COMFORTING AND SOOTHING!, Jun 1 2004

Want to get away from traffic, stress and 2004 life? Read this series of books - buy them all! If you craved Jan Karon's Mitford and couldn't get enough of Maine's Island Angel series - then this is your next stop. Fix a cup of tea, turn off the TV, and lose yourself in this Cotswold Cottage gift. But I warn you - if you only buy one you will be left salivating for the rest. Buy them all, stack them beside your chair -- and read away. They are WONDERFUL!

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok......., May 16 2004
By Fabian (Singapore) - See all my reviews
This book is a captivating read but it has a number of flaws.Firstly, the ghost of Aunt dimity returned and she actually communicated with Lori and Bill!!That part was hard to believe. Also,I found the character,Aunt Dimity,a little unbelievable. She seemed like a character from a fairytale, who created stories to brighten up people's lives. She was a too good to be true. However,I still give it 3 stars as i think it's still an awesome mystery, despite the flaws. It's definitely a great holiday read!
