2.0 out of 5 stars Misleading and Very Disappointing, Feb 10 2007
By Gustav (Toronto, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hangman (Paperback)

The book quotes that Slade is a rival to Stephen King. So I bought it. I shouldn't have.

There is simply no comparison. That quote is false advertizing. There are no supernatural elements (also promised inside the cover). There is no gripping mood of fear, terror, horror. The writers showed little ability in making me dread tuning the page.

The novel is discursive and rambling, loaded with an excess of research on the history of hanging, where very little would have gone a long way.

There seemed to be a bizarre authorial decision in play: Every single time a victim is referred to, the victim is referred to as having been hanged. While it may be true that each victim was hanged, it just is not human speech to always refer to it that way. It seemed to me - I could be wrong - that there was not one instance of a cop, detective, reporter, civilian, whoever simply saying that someone had been killed. I guess I'm pointing this out because I have never read a novel in which the use of one word started to drive me nuts. Okay, I get it. That's the title. That's the m.o. But people don't all talk, all the same, all the time!

By the last 100 pages, I felt so bored and let down that I scarcely cared who the killer was - and right now, I honestly can't remember.

I give it 2 stars because there is some fun and wit in the writing. It is not a total disaster. But neither is it what it is purported to be - a horror novel, or even a thriller.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good old Slade fare, Feb 27 2002
By Steven Grogan (Troy, NY United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Hangman (Paperback)
This is Slade retreading similar ground. That doesn't mean it's bad; it is up to the standards of his other books. However, I did notice an annoying tendency he has to either (a) kill off characters who appeared a book or two ago or (b) turn characters from previous books into killers of later books. Eventually all his protagonists will be nuts and he'll have no more Special X books to write! However, it's still a good effort...

3.0 out of 5 stars An ok read, Feb 11 2002
By flodnag (NY, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hangman (Paperback)
This is the first Slade novel I've tried, and it wasn't bad. The writing's ok, the story's ok, and the characters are pretty good. Now, keep in mind that it's a thriller and some of the stuff that happens is, um, unlikely, in a real world. Make shift hangman nooses I'm sure are not the easiest things in the world to set up, and one has to wonder about the amount of strength needed to do some of these things, but... The only problem I had with book, is the research done. While it's nice to read a book that has been researched, it's another to read all of it in a book. At the end, you'll know your hangmen history quite well. Like I said, it's an ok read.
