The story takes place in the time of Mote in Gods Eye but is told from the perspective of several residents of a fallen Empire-Of-Man planet. The Planet hadn't been visited by star-ship since early in the Secession wars and now is being visited by an Empire ship. The way the Emperials deal with planets joining the Empire is very well handled in this book.

The main character in this story is a military man who has a very good foundation in ancient weapons. (sound like Janissaries?) He is placed in a situation where he must train primitive and disorganized warriors in an attempt to create an infantry. There are multiple story-lines that are overlapping.

I strongly recommend this book for readers of Mote.
