Grade 4-6-- In an effort to take the perfect picture for the cover of the school yearbook, Tamara ventures into the Canyon Ridge nature preserve. There she and her friend, Hillary, see a Native American boy who seems to vanish into thin air; see and hear mysterious mountain lions that seem to materialize from nowhere; and are chased by rough men claiming to be geologists, who turn out to be dumping toxic waste in the canyon. Plotting is brisk, every chapter ends in a cliff-hanger, and characterization is minimal.
