From the moment you begin Clive Cussler's latest undersea thriller, you know that you're in the hands of a old pro; thus any lingering crotchetiness over the book's stereotypical villains is offset by deft plotting and taut action. Flood Tide details the exploits of Dirk Pitt, Special Projects Director of the National Underwater and Marine Agency, whom Cussler fans already know and love. Judging by this book, "Special Projects" seems to be a euphemism for blowing stuff up. Pitt's worthy adversary is Qin Shang, a Chinese shipping tycoon who is definitely from the Fu Manchu school of management. As part of a nefarious plot to bring the United States to its knees with a flood of illegal immigrants, Qin Shang operates a secluded gulag in rural Washington, which the vacationing (ha!) Pitt stumbles upon. A lot of entertaining mayhem ensues, both on the water and under it. Flood Tide's enthusiastic xenophobia can stick in the throat, and may get in the way for some. I'm an Australian of Asian descent, and I've been a huge Clive Cussler (and Tom Clancy) fan since I was about 12 years old. It was Clive Cussler that introduced me to the concept of "sex scenes" within books, and because I had a fascination of the ocean, NUMA as a concept always fascinated me.

Up til' now, I'd always assumed that Dirk Pitt as a character was fighting for the freedom of everyone around the world, regardless of their race. This isn't the first time Clive Cussler has used Asian villains in his novels (Deep Six), but it's the first time he's ever expressed any antipathy or animosity towards Asians in general.

Both Tom Clancy and Clive Cussler formed an integral part of my childhood reading. Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, Raise the Titanic, Deep Six - these were all books I loved reading. But now that I'm aware of their antipathy towards Asians, I feel like I've been unceremoniously excluded from an important club. I want to love Cussler's novels, but I just can't if he's not going to extend the same respect towards me as a reader.

this was a wonderful cussler. it had great characters and an amazing plot. the action scenes were well thought out and exciting. i spent so much straight time reading this book that it is only beat by the potter series.

Not my favorite - used to be a fan - i found clive cussler's writing to show how full of himself and dirk he really is very pompus - i now dislike reading him because of his style in this book - his ego has finally exploded!
