Miles is stuck visiting Cetaganda with his doltish cousin Ivan, representing Barrayaran nobility at an Imperial funeral. Three attacks and a mysterious murder later, Miles is juggling two emperors, two secret services, and a half-dozen traitors--nd that's not even counting the women.

A friend, knowing I'm reading the John Ringo military series, recommended Bujold's books to me. This was the easiest to find immediately, but now I'm told I would've enjoyed it more if I had read the earlier books first.

Could be, but I did enjoy this immensely. It had enough adventure, enough of a puzzle, and enough humor to make it one of the most enjoyable science-fiction books I've read recently. Although there's definitely some science in it, it's not what I think of as "hard" science-fiction. The characters don't get carried away with long technical dissertations, and I like it for that.

Miles and his cousin are on a routine diplomatic visit to the adversary planet of Cetaganda and are immediately confronted with what appears to be a murder attempt upon them. Further events indicate that they are being set up in an elaborate plot that will result in hostilities between their world and Cetaganda.

Miles is, at my first glance, a notable character. He doesn't have the looks to be a great romancer, though that doesn't keep his imagination from running free with possibilities. He has a knack for continually stepping into trouble and yet reasoning himself out of it.

This is indeed among the most enjoyable recent science-fiction I've read.

It's a quite gripping book with an interesting plot which takes place at the impressive capital of Cetaganda. Miles Vorkosigan, the main character of this book (and of really extraordinary appearances, to tell the truth), uses all his detective and diplomatical skills to find the Truth and to save both his homeworld and the Cetagandan empire.

I was torn on whether I should give this book four stars or five. I ended up going with four purely because of the extent of Miles' "ga-ga-ishness" over the haut Rian. It's just too extreme for Miles' personality. Other than that, I loved the book. It fleshes out both Ivan and one of Barrayar's main rivals: Cetaganda. It also contains a paragraph that kicks off the "Terran C" plot in Ethan of Athos. Overall, a very good book to read.
