Grade 4-6?Despite the series title, Kehret's latest offering is more mystery than horror. This first installment introduces Kayo Benton, baseball fanatic, and Rosie Saunders, brain, founding members of the Care Club. The girls share a love of animals and complement and encourage one another. They enter their pets in a cat show in hopes of winning the $100 first prize, which they plan to donate to the Humane Society. However, neither wins the cash, and Kayo's cat Webster is stolen. When the two friends track the thief, they are kidnapped by him and his accomplice, who turn out to be the same thieves who have been terrorizing the neighborhood. The youngsters manage to foil the robbers and rescue both Webster and Kayo's mother's stolen silver tea set. Kehret's style and story line are more engaging than most mystery series aimed at this age group. A promising beginning to a series that's sure to be popular.?Christina Dorr, Calcium Primary School, NY
