Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

This clever and inventive tale works on three levels: as an intriguing science fiction concept, a realistic character study and a touching love story. Henry De Tamble is a Chicago librarian with "Chrono Displacement" disorder; at random times, he suddenly disappears without warning and finds himself in the past or future, usually at a time or place of importance in his life. This leads to some wonderful paradoxes. From his point of view, he first met his wife, Clare, when he was 28 and she was 20. She ran up to him exclaiming that she'd known him all her life. He, however, had never seen her before. But when he reaches his 40s, already married to Clare, he suddenly finds himself time travelling to Clare's childhood and meeting her as a 6-year-old. The book alternates between Henry and Clare's points of view, and so does the narration. Reed ably expresses the longing of the one always left behind, the frustrations of their unusual lifestyle, and above all, her overriding love for Henry. Likewise, Burns evokes the fear of a man who never knows where or when he'll turn up, and his gratitude at having Clare, whose love is his anchor. The expressive, evocative performances of both actors convey the protagonists' intense relationship, their personal quirks and their reminiscences, making this a fascinating audio.

From AudioFile

Although the title suggests that this is science fiction, Niffenegger's charming, emotionally charged novel is much more a love story. Told alternately from the viewpoints of time traveler Henry and his wife, Clare, it's highly enjoyable on audio. Readers Christopher Burns and Maggi-Meg Reed blend their respective chapters seamlessly. Each reader characterizes all roles within a chapter, and the depictions mesh beautifully. Both narrators characterize Korean friend Kimmy in a charmingly amusing voice and lend a light mood to the couple's daughter, Alba. Burns portrays the emotional chaos of Henry's life so genuinely as to cast the listener directly into his pain and joy. The abridged recording leaves one longing for more. 5.0 out of 5 stars TREMENDOUS X 8, Sep 2 2004
By A Customer
The love story between Clare and Henry is tremendous. And clever! The difference in their age is 8 years; 8, incidentally, is the symbol of infinity. So between them, for them to share and try to bridge, is infinity. This is just one of the many subtle touches of this beautiful novel about love over time. I recommend it highly!

Also highly recommended: Jennifer Paddock's A SECRET WORD.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book!, Sep 26 2008

(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
I stayed away from The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger for a while. The reviews seemed to range from brilliant to people not enjoying it at all. Now I add myself to the group of readers who love this book. With its most unusual concept - a man who can travel through time - the book is not at all futuristic or bordering on science fiction. I loved the writing style throughout the book and, while it took me a few chapters to get used to the time shifting, it was utterly amazing to learn how everything unfolded to fit together as more and more of the story was revealed through the various timelines. The movement back and forth through time was not at all confusing. Ultimately, this was the amazing love story of Clare and Henry. Deeply sad in some ways, it was also very moving. This was definitely one of the most different books I've read in a while and also one of the best.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST SELLER FOR A REASON, Feb 4 2005
By Adrienne Moss (Durango, CO) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
There are "best sellers" that are on the charts for a blink of an eye, achieving their fast but liquid success because of pop culture's rule of 15-minutes of fame: "ROYAL DUTY" as an example. I don't fault such titles or authors. There is a place for these flash in the pan books, a huge place for them. Our culture thrives on them.

There are, though, other "best sellers" that achieve their success because of the quality of the book. In some cases it is the quality of the writing: "ROOTS" as an example. In some cases it is a universal theme: "THE FIVE PEOPLE YOU MEET IN HEAVEN" as an example. In some cases it is a particularly moving story: "MY FRACTURED LIFE" as an example. In some cases it is the one of a kind nature of the story: "THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK."

In some cases what makes a book successful and thus memorable is its totally unique writing style, such as in the case of "THE TIME TRAVELER'S WIFE." The writing is fresh and lively, the story is compelling, but the true grasp is the unique way in which it is written and the hybrid mix of genres.

These types of books continue to sell and remain in our collective cultural conscience long after they have been bumped off the "best seller" list. "THE TIME TRAVELER'S WIFE" belongs among this collective cultural conscience.
