Review

"What a delightful entertainment, spun together as only master storyteller Robert Kroetsch can weave it. A novel to relish, happily." --Rudy Wiebe

"Fascinating ... a welcome addition to Canada's national literature." --The Vancouver Sun

"The extravagance, the outrage, the glorious grime and heavy nuggets, the people with preposterous names ... I can't remember when I enjoyed a novel so damned much." --George Bowering

"The Catcher in the Rye meets The Call of the Wild... Kroetsch has crafted his most compelling narrative yet." --Winnipeg Free Press

Product Description

Governor General's Award-winning author Robert Kroetsch takes us back to the historic days of the Klondike Gold Rush with a gripping tale of three entrepreneurs desperate to strike it rich.

Fourteen-year-old Peek and his mother, known to most as Lou, hitch up with Benjamin Redd, a cooper with a secret stash of whiskey -- he intends to sell it and buy into his friend Dan McGrew's claim in Dawson. The three of them endure avalanches, near-starvation, treachery, and a cast of colourful characters in their quest to reach the fabled city and find their fortune.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kroetsch's Klondike, May 3 2008
By Mr. Ed in Toronto (Toronto, Ont) - See all my reviews
A terrific tale--and it's response to Robert Service's "The Shooting of Dan McGrew" is only part of the fun. I think Kroetsch lost some of his readers with _Alibi_ and _The Puppeteers_ and they haven't yet discovered how, at the end of his career, he returned to the heights of his wonderful and wonderfully comic story telling. Highly recommended: then, after you've read this, go back and discover _The Words of My Roaring_, _The Studhorse Man_, and _Badlands_
