Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

The latest from the Clark suspense factory has a spunky New Jersey prosecutor, Kerry McGrath, as its heroine in danger. Kerry has taken an interest in a 10-year-old murder case, in which Skip Reardon had been found guilty of slaying his beautiful wife, Suzanne, and has since been pleading his innocence from his jail cell. When Kerry's small daughter, Robin, goes to a New York plastic surgeon after a car crash, it is apparent that Dr. Smith, who was Suzanne's father, is weird. He seems to be fashioning the faces of young women to resemble his dead daughter?and it was his testimony that sent Skip to jail. Kerry's interest in the case (and her parallel interest in Skip's good-guy lawyer) may harm her chances of a judgeship, and it also draws the ominous attention of another possible suspect, James Weeks, a wealthy real-estate magnate with rumored mob connections. Then there's elegant, tasteful art burglar Jason Arnott, who had also known Suzanne.... As usual, Clark's plot, unfolded in dozens of short chapters, is convoluted, full of red herrings and finally wrapped up with a villain out of left field. The writing is crisp but colorless, characterization minimal, atmosphere nonexistent; but the cozy evocation of a deserving damsel in distress who attains a happy ending seems never to disappoint her legions of fans. One million first printing; major ad/promo; Literary Guild selection; author tour.

From Library Journal

Prosecutor and aspiring judge Kerry McGrath can kiss the judgeship goodbye if she snoops into the murder of the beautiful Suzanne Reardon. Ten years earlier, the seemingly open-and-shut case propelled political careers and doomed the husband, Skip Reardon, to a 30-year sentence despite his desperate pleas of innocence. While sitting in the waiting room of a plastic surgeon, Dr. Smith, Kerry sees a patient who looks exactly like Suzanne Reardon. Kerry's shock is surpassed days later when she sees another. Questioning Dr. Smith wildly ruffles his feathers, and when Kerry learns that the doctor's testimony helped convict Skip Reardon, she teams up with Reardon's attorney and scours the world of gem thiefs, murderers, child stalkers, the Irish Mafia, and more to solve the mystery. This latest by the popular author of The Lottery Winner (S. & S., 1994) should do well in public libraries.

5.0 out of 5 stars Let Me Call You Sweetheart, Nov 8 2006
By E.G. Matthews "An Avid Reader" (Ohio, USA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Kerry McGrath, an attractive young assistant prosecutor for Bergen County, New Jersey, has recently endured a shock in her relatively normal life. When Kerry's too-busy-for-quality-time-with-the-daughter ex-husband, defense attorney Bob Kinellen, and her beloved ten-year-old daughter Robin are in an accident, Robin needs surgery to help remove the scars on her face from the car crash. So Kerry takes Robin to the prestigious St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital in New York City, where Dr. Charles Smith, the miracle-worker plastic surgeon, does his business. Robin's scars are healed, but something that Kerry sees extremely disturbs her. While reading old magazines in the waiting room, Kerry sees a woman leave the office with a beautiful new face. Days later, Kerry sees the same face... but on another woman.

Something about that beautiful face---the chestnut curls, the pouting and full lips, the deep brown eyes, the small button nose---seems oddly familiar to Kerry. Then it hits her: it is the face of Suzanne Reardon, the woman murdered in the Sweetheart Murder Case ten years ago! Suzanne's husband, Skip, was sentenced to thirty years in prison for supposedly killing his wife in a jealous rage. But later, it is revealed that Charles Smith was actually Suzanne's father, and it was his condemning testimony that ultimately sent Skip to prison. But, as Kerry investigates the case with Skip's faithful and handsome attorney, Geoff Dorso, it becomes clearer and clearer that Skip may not have murdered Suzanne.

As Kerry delves further and further into Suzanne Reardon's life, many questions begin to arise. Why would Charles Smith have lied on the stand? Did Suzanne's father perform plastic surgery on her to make her beautiful? How much did Dr. Smith love his daughter? Why does Dr. Smith keep modeling Suzanne's father on other women so closely? Was Suzanne murdered in anger at her extreme infidelity? How does Bob Kinellen's lowlife client, mobster Jimmy Weeks, come into the equation? Is Kerry being stalked? And who seems so intent on scaring Kerry off the investigation that they would so far as to threaten poor little Robin?

It seems to Kerry that the only that justice can be served for both the deceased Suzanne and the wrongfully imprisoned Skip is to finally uncover the true answer to the Sweetheart Murder Case; but fulfilling this goal may bring Kerry into a deadly trap...

Mary Higgins Clark, "The Queen of Suspense," once again delivers a suspenseful with a large cast of characters and crisp writing. Though there is little to no actual character development in the story---or any of Mary Higgins Clark's other novels---it is how truly realistic all of the characters are that makes this author so popular. Kerry's thirst for justice and her motherly protection over Robin is believable, and a sudden twist at the story's end is just enough to tantalize eager readers. Though probably not one of my favorite Mary Higgins Clark books, Let Me Call You Sweetheart is still a wonderful read sure to whet your appetite for more.

Highly recommended!
