Product Description

Melody Logan knew her beautiful mother, Haille, was unhappy in their hardscrabble mining town....

But with her wonderful father's unwavering love, Melody always felt safe -- until a dreadful mine accident ripped her from her family's moorings.

She was still devastated by her father's death when she left West Virginia with Haille to follow her mother's dream of becoming a model or actress. But first they stopped in Cape Cod to visit her father's family at last.

Melody knew only that her grandparents had disowned their son when he married Haille -- just because she was an orphan, her mother said. Yet moments after Melody first laid eyes on dour, Bible-spouting Uncle Jacob, nervous Aunt Sara, and her cousins -- handsome Cary, whose twin, Laura, had been killed recently in a sailing accident, and sweet, deaf little May -- Haille announced that Melody was to live with them.

Sleeping in Laura's old room, Melody was awash in a sea of grief and confusion, with only her beloved fiddle to comfort her. Then Cary revealed the truth he'd gleaned about her parents -- a sad shocking story that only puzzled her more. Melody knew nothing of the dark deceptions that would soon surface...the devastating betrayals she would face before she glimpsed the faint, beckoning lights of a safe harbor....

First Sentence
When I was a little girl, I believed that people could get what they wished for if they wished hard enough and long enough and were good enough, and although I'm fifteen now and long ago stopped believing in things like the Tooth Fairy, Santa Claus, and the Easter Bunny, I never completely stopped believing there was something magical in the world around us. Read the first page

5.0 out of 5 stars this book is awesome, April 25 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Melody (Mass Market Paperback)
this is a compelling book with lots of great surprises. Here is a summary that won't give away TOO much. Melody lived with her mom and dad in a trailer park in west virginia. melody is devastated when she finds out that her dad died in a coalmining accident. Her mom is not one to grieve, so she quickly picks up a new man. She drops melody off at a relatives house at the cape while she goes off to try to be a model and actress. Melody is welcomed by her aunt sara and cousin may. She is not welcomed though by her uncle jacob and other cousin cary. She soon finds out that that family is also grieving over their daughter/sisters death. after many exciting events melody really unravels the truth about her real family's past. She has many adventures with her cousin Cary, finding out that the Cape isn't the "perfect paradise". I think this was one of her best books for it was greatly written and had a interesting story line. I could hardly put the book down. If you read this series, I would also reccommend the Dollanganger series. The plot is very exciting, maybe even more so than this one. It is about a mother who tries to get money from her parents, but to do so she must lock up her 4 children in the mansion's attic. It was a great, captivating story, and I would highly reccommend it to all V.C Andrews readers, and also others. She is a fabulous author with great ideas for her books.

2.0 out of 5 stars Okay, not the best, Dec 2 2003
This review is from: Melody (Mass Market Paperback)
I'm a V.C. Andrews fan so I have read most of her books. Of all the books I have read, I like this series the least. Melody comes off as this immature, whiny, childish character who falls apart at the first sign of conflict. Her cousin Cary acts like a whipped dog pining away in his obsession over his dead sister. The storyline is okay, but varies little from V.C. Andrews' other books. I would recommend reading Heaven and the rest of the Casteel series instead, at least the characters in that series are actually likeable.
