Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

According to Farland's Web site, the Runelords series, of which this is the fourth book after 2001's Wizardborn, was inspired by a hallucination. It also reads like one at times, full of rich and brilliant descriptions, but not always making much sense. Magical endowments-attributes such as sight, brawn or endurance transferred between people, leaving one crippled and the other superhuman-permit Averan, a nine-year-old wizard-in-training, to keep pace with the Earth King, Prince Gaborn and his cohorts as they search underground for the Queen of the Reavers. As those above ground prepare for war, Gaborn learns that his elemental powers are nothing compared to those of the Glories, forces of light who exhort their followers to love all men equally and beware the corrupting powers of the One True Master of Evil. The author rushes the action in the final chapters, the last one so condensed it reads almost like the summary of another complete book. Hopefully, the strength of the setting will help Farland to find a better pace for future volumes; this one, despite its promise, is strictly for the fans.

From Booklist

The apparent conclusion of the Runelords brings the saga's conflicts to a resounding climax in a three-cornered confrontation. For Raj Athen has given up his humanity for immortality and has marshaled hordes of magicians and sorcerers; Prince Gaborn has been victorious as the Earth King and is holding his ground; and the insectoid Reavers have found their ruler, lurking deep underground in the Lair of Bones and wielding its subjects against everyone else. The suspense is real, the action is nonstop, and the characterizations continue to convince. The amount of explicit violence and gore delivered by natural and supernatural means remains as high as ever in the Runelords--high enough, perhaps, to have cost Farland some of the saga's initial readers. Readers not put off thus far, however, surely will hang on to the end of a series that has put Farland on high-fantasy readers' maps. Roland Green

3.0 out of 5 stars Was expecting better, Feb 19 2006

I actually did enjoy this work, but it could've been so much more. As I've said in other reviews, some of our favorite authors are churning out rather than creating and that is what it felt like here. If you want us to continue following your career than at least give us something more coherent and cohesive.

Overall, not bad. Many parts of the book are enjoyable if you overlook some inconsistancies. No one is perfect, but you'd think the editors would've caught some of this.

**A book I would also recommend is The Unsuspecting Mage by Brian S. Pratt. This, the first installment of The Morcyth Saga is a great beginning for a new author. Battles, magic, gods, secret passages and intrigue, all the elements of a classic epic fantasy! Any fantasy reader will enjoy it. Also it didn't take 4-6 weeks to come as I had been worried about. Only about fifteen days. Still a wait but worth it!

1.0 out of 5 stars What editor let this out?, May 28 2004
By Jason Lollis "wack job" (Olympia, WA USA) - See all my reviews

I'm a fan of this series. I like the ideas David Farland plays with (an oligarchical system relying upon its people for taxes in funds as well as taxes in body and mind, a non-scientific magic system where knowledge of spells cannot always be taught and a strength in unity theme). I like the previous books in the series. And then I read Book 4. Characters' names are misplaced in chapters, endowments are misnamed, character resolutions are incomplete or not even referenced (whatever happened to Daylan Hammer?) and the pace, oh my, the pace.

So what happened with this book? Did David Farland grow tired of this universe and push this out only at the coaxing of Tor? Did his editor suddenly go blind? Did somebody else write this? While it is nice to actually have some finality to a fantasy series (beware Jordan, beware!), this book is a travesty.

And while I'm ranting, when will the publishing companies realize that with cover art like this, nobody is going to want to read their books in public?

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Ending to Enjoyable Ride, May 3 2004
By David Michael (Manassas Park, VA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This 4th book in the Runelords series does a thorough job of bringing everything to a close. I enjoy a good never-ending fantasy saga as much as the next geek, but it is pleasant to occasionally have a story all wrapped up in a neat little bow. Lair of Bones does that comprehensively--personally, I could only think of one dangling plot line that I would have liked to see closed. And all done in a way that leaves natural room for more books later without leaving nagging questions unanswered. To me, that is a satisfying conclusion. The one criticism I have is that after a well paced storyline for 3 books, the second half of Lair of Bones seems rushed compared to the other books. There was a lot to resolve and another 50-75 pages could have made some of the resolutions feel more fleshed out.

I enjoyed the series, would suggest it without hesitation and hope there will be more. If the movie makes it to theaters, I'll be there!
