Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Imagine Donald Trump as a drop-dead gorgeous woman and you'll have an approximate image of Lara Cameron, the heroine of Sheldon's latest--barely tepid--potboiler. A super-successful real estate developer, Lara has made millions of dollars--and a few enemies--in her ascent from a childhood of deprivation to the upper echelons of the business world. When she falls in love with a renowned concert pianist, she sets about "winning" him as she would a prime piece of waterfront property. But her ties to a lawyer with Mafia connections and her shady way of doing business threaten her happiness and eventually her income and reputation. In settings that vary from Canada to Chicago and New York, bestselling novelist Sheldon ( The Other Side of Midnight, Rage of Angels ) brings real zest to the high-stakes poker game that provides the novel's backdrop. But his pancake-flat characters are as insubstantial as the paper fortunes that drive the real estate business. Moreover, the characters have an annoying tendency to speak in overwrought cliches; sounding for all the world like Scarlett O'Hara, young Lara laments, "Someday . . . I will have my own land, and no one--no one--will ever take it away from me." Frankly, by the final chapter, readers won't give a damn. First serial to Cosmopolitan; Literary Guild main selection.

From AudioFile

This rags-to-riches tale features Lara Cameron and the men in her life who either help or hinder her in her rise from boardinghouse tenant in Glass Bay, Nova Scotia, to real estate developer in Chicago and New York City. Sheldon introduces a multitude of characters, and Roddy McDowall is able to make them all come alive for the listener. Lara's slight Scottish accent is in sharp contrast to her father's Scottish brogue, made thicker by his heavy alcohol consumption. McDowall captures the dialects of all the Glass Bay tenants, the stammer of Lara's partner, Howard Keller, and the raspy voice of Paul Martin so accurately that a mental image of the characters emerges. 5.0 out of 5 stars Queen of the World, Aug 12 2003
This novel has a woman who thinks she is the "queen of the world." You make one mistake around her and you are history. She is obsessed with power and more power. Her life revolves around her company and how to make it grow. She has her talented pianist husband injured so he can spend more time with her. She consumes everyone around her and cannot figure out why people do not like her. Her husband knows about her intentions and yet he loves her for her devotion. Just like Sheldon's other novels, this one is hard to put down.
