From Publishers Weekly

A dark and alien peril casts an lengthening shadow over Midkemia as another Riftworld saga begins almost a generation after the events in The King's Buccaneer . Erik von Darkmoor, bastard son of the local baron, flees to the city of Krondor after accidentally killing his legitimate and sadistic half-brother. Condemned to death, Eric and his childhood friend, Rupert (Roo) Avery, are provisionally spared to serve in a desperate mission against the reptilian Pantathians, who plan to conquer Midkemia and bring back their goddess, Alma-Lodaka, one of the ancient Dragon Lords. The boys undergo brutal training and join others of their kind under the half-elf Calis, known as the Eagle of Krondor, in a bid to pass as mercenaries in the continent of Novindus, current battle center for the Pantathians and their reluctant allies, the also-reptilian Saaur. A sensitive coming-of-age tale in which brutality and camaraderie are equally present, Feist's newest saga has a freshness of vision that suggests it will avoid the staleness that often eats away at multivolume epics. In the first volume of the "Serpent War Saga," the best-selling author of the "Riftwar Saga" introduces a new twist to an old setting. The planets Kelewan and Midkemia, central to the Riftwar novels, are home to a pair of unlikely heroes who must fight an evil race of serpents.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Great beginning, Fév 28 2006
This book begins my personal favorite of Feist's many series. The next two follow along on the heels of each other while the fourth you can actually do without. It's good, but the first three is the core of this section of Midkemia

**A book I would also recommend is The Unsuspecting Mage by Brian S. Pratt. This, the first installment of The Morcyth Saga is a great beginning for a new author. Battles, magic, gods, secret passages and intrigue, all the elements of a classic epic fantasy! Any fantasy reader will enjoy it.

3.0étoiles sur 5 An Average Story, Light on Fantasy, Mars 27 2004
This is my first Raymond Feist book so I can't compare it to what has been before or since, but this book as a whole screams average. Which is not to say it is a bad book or badly written. The writing was average, i didn't throw the book down in disgust nor did his lingual prowess stupify me. The story was also fairly average, somewhat formulaic with a few shades of uniqueness on occassion. The verdict is: If it's lying around pick it up but don't go out of your way.

The story centers around the adventures of Erik and Roo, primarily Erik, with a few side pages on a magician named Miranda and her search for Pug of Stardock, a Master mage from previous books. Erik and Roo are shanghaied from their comfortable little province outside of Krondor to the far off continent of Novindus where an army of otherworldy lizardmen led by a mysterious Emerald Queen are ravaging the nations there. Prince Nicholas of Krondor believes it is only a matter of time before the lizardmen have laid waste to Novindus and set their red eyes across the sea upon Midkemia. So Erik, Roo and a force of brigands and cutthroats recruited by Calis, an elven son of Tomas (from earlier books), sail to Novindus to join the Emerald Queen's army disguised as mercenary band in an effort to glean information about the forces driving this invasion.

The story is light fantasy, little magic and mostly swordplay. I hope I helped. :)

5.0étoiles sur 5 Better than I expected, Fév 22 2004
I got this book with the last of my Christmas gift certificate money. While Feist may not be a Geroge RR. Martin he does manage to craft an enjoyable story with charecters that you can care about, particularly Erik and Roo, but I also like Bingo. There are times when the story seems to fall into a pattern but it never stays there for long.

Wonderful read I think this serise will tide me over untill the next book in A Song of Ice and Fire comes out.

5.0étoiles sur 5 A good start to a decent series.
In the Serpentwar Saga, Feist loses some of the magical grandeur of the Riftwar Saga. The characters are more "common", the focus is on a lower scale. Read more
