Grade 4-6 Treasure hidden during the Great Johnstown Flood is the focus of this Saturday matinee-style adventure. While spending the summer with his eccentric Great-Aunt Willi, Gordon recruits his friends to search for the two secret rooms which Aunt Willi claims are in the house. They discover blueprints showing secret rooms in three houses in town and a diary that describes a cache of old coins and jewels hidden in one of those rooms. The explorers' hunt for the mysterious hoard is shadowed by a stranger who also seems to know about the treasure. All of the ingredients are here: hidden clues, a disguised villain and a trio of young sleuths who operate with little adult interference. While the resolution depends heavily on coincidence, and there is only minimal character development, this mystery, like the old matinee adventures, provides satisfying, if undemanding, entertainment.
