Among the Hidden, Mars 13 2007
Among the Hidden Review
Author: Margaret Peterson Haddix
Can you imagine yourself not being known of your existence by your relatives other than your inner family, not having any friends, not ever seeing other people except for your parents and your two legal brothers? I can't imagine my life even close to that, but Luke the main character of Among the Hidden a book likely to be true in the future is living the hardest, most confusing, and frightening life that I can imagine!
Luke is a 13-year-old shadow child. There are two kinds of police in this world. The average typical police and the, population police. The population police have made many new laws and the most important one is that the population police hate shadow children. Shadow children are the third child and forth child in a family hiding from the population police because that one important law I that nobody is allowed . The population police will do anything to find and torture shadow children until they die. That's what every shadow child knows and is afraid of except for one, the one that changed Luke's life. One day he sees a girl peeking out one of the windows of one house, but he already saw the 2 boys from the family leave to what legal children go to as school. One day Luke builds the courage to run to the other house and to find out the truth. For weeks and months Luke ran across after meeting Jen and they become great friends. Jen tells Luke how wonderful it is when she's outside in the city except that she always is faking who she is by using a fake ID .Later on in the story Jen has a brilliant idea to get all third children free. Does Luke dare to follow on in this dangerous plan in the middle of the night holding up signs to let them free? Does Luke know the truth, can he trust everyone? Can he trust anyone?
This book is great to read especially because you can relate to the characters feelings because they are so real. The characters are also real because when you think of yourself in their
position they do what you would do and think what you would. Most readers can also relate the characters themselves and other people by making the characters seem real by basing the characters personality on another person the author may know.
A great thing about the book too is the writing style the author uses. I think she uses many juicy words that capture you into the book and holds suspense after every chapter so you can't put the book down. When you pass a cliffhanger the upcoming text is least expected, unpredictable, surprising text with another mystery to the story. (I think Margaret P Haddix also plans many connections between the characters so no character has a small part to the story and all characters have a reason to the story's plot.)
The ending of the book holds another one of the hundreds of cliffhangers in Margaret P Haddix's series of shadow children. Luke is on his way to a real school with a fake ID and the story continues in the second book called Among the Impostures. Surprises also jump out to all characters especially to Jen and sad and happy events happen until the book wraps up in realistic choices of characters and a mind full of questions waiting to be solved.
Every book has a major theme but this particular book has many themes and the author bases them on the most realistic events so the reader knows exactly how to base them towards their life. There are three major themes from Among the Hidden and many more from the whole series. One is... think before you act because you can't go back in time. I learned that when lke makes his many mistakes but luckily he finds his way out of things. Another is... danger is hidden at every corner of life; you never know what can happen. I learned that because when ever Luke thinks it is safe something else happens. Last but not least... anyone can do anything if they really try and never give up. I learned this when Luke tries to do something because every time he tries he sticks to it and succeeds. I find that these themes help you move on in life, stay safe and succeed in anything.
This book will be a great book for young adults ages 9-12 that like mysteries and parts of scariness. It is a book that will make you think of others, want to curl up in a corner that withholds a never ending adventure!

In a future where the government enforces a strict policy of allowing only 2 children to a family, illegal third child luke garner must lead a secretive and cocealed life in his family home and the surrounding wood. But soon his life becomes even more secretive when a housing development is built across from his house, and his parents, fearing for his safety, restrict him only to the confines of his home.Following the exploits of luke as he longs for freedom and a better life, this book is exciting interesting, and a heart pounding page-turner without much even happening. In fact, the plot is so simple it could be paraphrased into ashort story; but that is th beauty of the book, how the author wraps you into this frightening reality and portrays luke's feeling with such skill and description that the bookeasily recieves five stars from me.
