Product Description

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-9-Cathy Hopkins's second title in the series (Simon Pulse, 2003) about three 14-year-old friends who live in London takes place in the weeks leading up to Christmas and is told through the eyes of Izzie, a cosmically aware, vegetarian songwriter. While shopping in the mall for essential oils as a holiday gift for her friends, Lucy and Nesta, Izzie meets Mark and develops her first instant crush. Cathy Hopkins brings excitement, tension, and a strong dose of girl empowerment into Izzie's constant waiting for Mark to call. Ultimately, care from supportive parents and intervention by her friends help Izzie see that she shouldn't be putting her life on hold for a boy she hardly knows. Amanda Hulme, Australian theatre actress, provides an age-appropriate voice for Izzie, who is both bold and doubt ridden. Her excellent narration is crisp and fun and will certainly have teen appeal. The British slang can be easily understood in context. Cosmic Kisses stands on its own, and it's not necessary for listeners to be familiar with the first title in the series, Mates, Dates, and Inflatable Bras (May 2005, p. 67). For fans of Jacqueline Wilson, Louise Rennison, and Sue Limb.-Jo-Ann Carhart, East Islip Public Library, NY

From AudioFile

When teenager Izzie Foster falls head over heels for a new boy, she becomes a new person, and not a well-liked one, according to her two best friends. Amanda Hulme narrates Izzie's story, avidly capturing the angst of first love and the inner monologue of this "junior Bridget Jones." Although this is a fluffy story of romantic wishes, featuring horoscopes, hopeful spells, and overemotionalism, there is a painful lesson on true friendship and finding oneself. Hulme never misses a beat when changing characters, girl or boy, as Hopkins captures an awkward but endearing adolescent. 1.0 out of 5 stars mates, and dates, and tres boring lives, Jul 15 2004
god, this book is soo boring. I really love reading and i hardly ever stop a book in the middle but this one goes so slow. If people are looking for funny quick reads then check out the Georgia series by rennison. If there are people out there who are not great at reading and looking for something to waste time with then go to this series.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's alright..., Jun 5 2004

I mean, what do you expect from teenage books like these? It's cute, kind of boring and girly for a while, but still cute. Read it when you have a few hours on hand. It's not the greatest book ever, but still an okay read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Snaps for COSMIC KISSES!, May 10 2004
By Laura Dunham (Bak MSOA---west palm beach) - See all my reviews
Mates, Dates, and Cosmic Kisses is a typical story of a teenager going through tough times with friends, outlooks on the future, body image, teenage crushes on boys with "fab bods", and first kisses.
This story takes place in the heart of London. A fourteen-year-old girl hasn't any self-confidence. She believes her best friend has found a new best friend, and begins to feel very sorry for herself. She feels even more sorry for herself when everyone but her knows what they want to do when they get older. But when her best friend's new friend's brother kisses her, her problems just multiply. But as the story progresses, she begins to realize the with the help of friends, moms, and Angel Cards, she can find her true self and break through the boundaries that keep her from the real her.
This is a story about self-confidence and realizing your natural beauty. I recommend this book to all girls from the ages 12-16 that enjoy a little humor, romance, and sympathy all stirred together to create a whimsical story about life and overcoming your hardships.
Although the book started slow and was difficult to get into it, it soon wrapped you into its web of realistic problems and how to fix them. It had its dull and slow moving places, and then again it also had its fun and energetic places that kept me reading on and on. It was not my favorite book that I have ever read, but it was not on my list of bad books. I would rate this book 4 stars out of 5.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Knockoff of Angus, Thongs, and Full Frontal Snogging
